How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Electronic Assembler
Confirm your STEM OPT eligibility before applying
Electronic Assembler roles may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree is in electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related STEM field. Verify your CIP code with your DSO early so you can communicate your full authorization timeline to employers.
Highlight hands-on technical skills in your resume
Employers screening OPT candidates for assembler roles prioritize specific skills. List soldering certifications, PCB assembly experience, quality control methods like IPC standards, and familiarity with ESD protocols. Concrete technical detail signals you can contribute immediately without extensive on-the-job training.
Target employers already familiar with OPT authorization
Defense contractors, medical device manufacturers, and established electronics firms regularly hire on work authorization. These companies have HR teams that understand EAD timelines and OPT reporting requirements, which reduces friction and avoids delays caused by unfamiliarity with F-1 work authorization rules.
Address your work authorization timeline proactively
Before an offer is made, clarify your EAD expiration date and STEM extension eligibility. Employers planning long-term headcount want to know you can stay beyond your initial OPT period. A clear, confident explanation of your timeline removes ambiguity and builds confidence in the hiring process.
Get IPC or J-STD soldering certifications if you haven't already
IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 certifications are industry-recognized credentials that set OPT candidates apart in competitive applicant pools. Many employers list them as preferred qualifications. Holding one signals quality standards competency and reduces the employer's concern about onboarding time for an OPT hire.
Understand the employer's E-Verify requirement
OPT employment requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify if you're on the STEM OPT extension. Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer. If the employer isn't enrolled, your DSO cannot approve the extension, which puts your continued authorization at risk.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an Electronic Assembler on OPT?
Yes, as long as the role is directly related to your field of study. Electronic Assembler positions typically align with degrees in electrical engineering technology, manufacturing engineering, or electronics. Your DSO must confirm the connection between the job and your degree before you begin work. Employment must start after your EAD is issued and within your authorized OPT period.
Do Electronic Assembler jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
They can, but it depends on your degree's CIP code rather than the job title alone. If your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as electrical engineering or manufacturing engineering technology, and the employer is E-Verify enrolled, you can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO and check the DHS STEM designated degree list before assuming eligibility.
How do I find Electronic Assembler jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for F-1 OPT students, making it easier to find Electronic Assembler openings at employers who understand work authorization requirements. Searching through general platforms often means filtering out roles that won't consider OPT candidates, which wastes time during an already tight authorization window.
What happens to my OPT authorization if my Electronic Assembler contract ends?
If your employment ends before your OPT period expires, you enter a 60-day grace period during which you can find new qualifying employment, transfer to a different visa status, or prepare to depart the U.S. You must report the change in employment to your DSO promptly. During the grace period you cannot work, but you can actively job search and prepare applications.
Do I need my employer to file any paperwork to work as an Electronic Assembler on OPT?
For initial OPT, the employer does not file a petition with USCIS. You present your EAD and complete Form I-9 with your employer. For the STEM OPT extension, your employer must complete and sign Form I-983 (Training Plan), be enrolled in E-Verify, and provide reporting updates at six-month intervals. The employer's obligations are more significant during the STEM extension than during standard OPT.
