Confirm your degree qualifies for STEM OPT
Finance and economics degrees qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension only if your program has an approved STEM-designated CIP code. Check with your DSO before applying so you know whether you're pitching 12 months or 36 months of work authorization to employers.
Lead with your authorized work timeline upfront
Employers often assume OPT is complicated. Stating clearly that you have 12 months of authorization now, with a 24-month STEM extension available, removes the ambiguity and makes the conversation easier. Concrete timelines reduce friction more than vague reassurances about visa status.
Target firms with established OPT hiring patterns
Large financial services firms, asset managers, and fintech companies hire OPT students regularly and have HR processes built for it. Smaller boutique firms may not. Prioritize employers with a demonstrated history of sponsoring or at minimum hosting international students in analyst roles.
Apply before your OPT start date if possible
You can apply for OPT up to 90 days before your program end date. Starting your internship search early means you can line up an offer while still enrolled, giving employers more confidence in your timeline and reducing any gap between graduation and your start date.
Match your degree field to the role description carefully
STEM OPT extensions require that your job be directly related to your degree. A financial analyst internship tied to a finance or economics degree is straightforward. If your degree is in a different field, document the connection between your coursework and the analytical responsibilities in the job description.
Get your E-Verify question ready before interviews
STEM OPT employers must be enrolled in E-Verify. Before any offer stage, confirm the company participates. Asking early in the process, framed as ensuring compliance on your end, signals professionalism rather than desperation and avoids late-stage complications that can delay your start date.
Financial Analyst Intern OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Financial Analyst Intern on OPT?
Yes. Financial Analyst Intern roles fall under SOC code 13-2051, which is a qualifying occupation for OPT work authorization. Your employment must be directly related to your degree field. A finance, accounting, economics, or business degree will typically satisfy this requirement with no issues.
Do Financial Analyst Intern positions qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
They can, but it depends on two things: your degree must carry an approved STEM CIP code, and the role must be in a STEM-designated occupation. Financial analyst roles qualify under STEM OPT if your degree program is classified under an eligible CIP code. Economics and quantitative finance programs often qualify. Confirm your program's CIP code with your DSO before assuming you're eligible.
How do I find Financial Analyst Intern jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for OPT-eligible candidates, so you're not wasting time applying to roles where employers won't consider international students. Search for Financial Analyst Intern roles on Migrate Mate and filter by your OPT status to see employers actively open to sponsoring or hosting F-1 workers. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and screening after.
Does my employer need to do anything special to hire me on OPT?
For standard OPT, your employer has minimal obligations beyond normal I-9 verification. For STEM OPT, the requirements are more involved: the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, sign a formal training plan with you (Form I-983), and provide a work environment where you gain knowledge related to your degree. Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting a STEM OPT offer.
What happens to my OPT if my Financial Analyst Internship ends early?
OPT has an unemployment limit of 90 days total for standard OPT and 150 days for STEM OPT. If your internship ends before your OPT expires, those days start counting toward your unemployment limit. You can seek new employment during that window. Reporting employment changes to your DSO promptly is required and keeps your SEVIS record accurate.
