OPT Laundry Jobs
Laundry jobs in the U.S. span commercial facilities, hotel housekeeping departments, and healthcare linen services. Most roles are classified as unskilled labor, which creates OPT authorization challenges. Your EAD must be valid, and your position needs to connect to your degree field to satisfy STEM or standard OPT requirements.

Verify your job qualifies under your degree field
OPT requires your position to be directly related to your degree. For laundry roles, this is most defensible if your field covers operations management, textile science, or hospitality management. Document the connection clearly before accepting any offer.
Prioritize institutional employers over standalone laundromats
Hospitals, hotels, and university facilities are far more familiar with EAD-based hiring than small independent laundry shops. Larger employers have HR teams who understand work authorization paperwork and are less likely to reject your application on compliance concerns.
Keep your EAD and offer letter timeline aligned
Your start date cannot precede your EAD validity date. Confirm your authorization window before committing to any start date. If your EAD is pending, communicate that clearly to the employer and request a start date with a reasonable buffer.
Track your 60-day unemployment clock carefully
OPT allows a maximum of 60 unemployment days during standard OPT. If you are between laundry roles, count those days carefully. Taking on part-time work in a related capacity can help you stay active and preserve your authorized unemployment buffer.
Report your employer to your DSO immediately upon hire
Your Designated School Official must update your SEVIS record within 10 days of starting any OPT job. Failing to report your laundry employer promptly puts your status at risk, even if the job itself is legitimate and directly related to your program.
Understand the distinction between part-time and full-time OPT limits
Pre-completion OPT caps work at 20 hours per week while school is in session. Post-completion OPT allows full-time hours. Laundry facilities often offer variable shift schedules, so confirm your current OPT phase before agreeing to any weekly hour commitment.
Laundry OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work in a laundry role on OPT?
Yes, but the role must be directly related to your degree field. Laundry positions are most defensible for students in hospitality management, textile science, or operations management programs. If your degree has no clear connection to the work, USCIS may consider the employment unauthorized. Document the relationship between your coursework and the job duties before you begin.
Do laundry employers typically understand OPT work authorization?
It depends heavily on the employer type. Large hotel chains, hospital systems, and university laundry facilities generally have HR teams experienced with EAD-based hiring. Smaller independent laundromats are less familiar with the process and may decline to hire OPT students simply due to unfamiliarity. Targeting institutional employers significantly improves your chances. Migrate Mate lists employers with a track record of hiring international students, making your search more efficient.
Does working in a laundry facility count toward STEM OPT?
STEM OPT requires your role to fall within a STEM-designated field and your degree to appear on the official STEM Designated Degree Program List. Laundry and linen services are not inherently STEM occupations. However, if you hold a degree in industrial engineering, operations research, or a related STEM field and the role involves meaningful process optimization or systems management, a case could potentially be made. Consult your DSO before relying on this.
What documentation do I need to start working at a laundry facility on OPT?
You need a valid EAD card, your Form I-20 reflecting OPT authorization, and your passport. Your employer will complete Form I-9 using these documents. You should also have your DSO's contact information available in case the employer has compliance questions. Report the employment to your DSO within 10 days of your start date to ensure your SEVIS record reflects the active job.
How do I find laundry employers that are open to hiring OPT students?
Search Migrate Mate, which filters job listings to surface roles from employers experienced with international student work authorization. Focusing on corporate hotel brands, hospital networks, and university facilities also increases your odds since these organizations already have onboarding processes built around EAD verification. Avoid relying on general job postings that do not specify sponsorship or OPT acceptance, as those employers often lack familiarity with the process.
