Confirm your degree supports the role
Physical Therapy Technician roles typically require a degree in kinesiology, exercise science, or a health sciences field. Verify your program of study aligns with the job before applying, since USCIS expects a direct connection between your degree and your OPT position.
Target employers familiar with OPT
Hospital systems, outpatient rehab chains, and university-affiliated clinics hire internationally more frequently than small private practices. Larger organizations have HR infrastructure to process work authorization paperwork and are less likely to be unfamiliar with OPT employment requirements.
Address your work authorization early
Mention your OPT status in your cover letter rather than waiting for an employer to ask. Clarify that OPT does not require the employer to file any petition or pay government fees, which removes a common objection before it becomes a barrier.
Track your OPT end date relative to your job search
Physical Therapy Technician roles often have longer hiring timelines due to background checks and clinical credentialing. Start your job search at least three months before your OPT authorization expires to leave room for onboarding delays without losing work authorization.
Highlight hands-on clinical experience clearly
Employers in physical therapy settings prioritize candidates who can document patient-facing hours, equipment operation, and supervised clinical rotations. Quantify your experience in your resume, including specific modalities you have assisted with, to stand out against candidates with only classroom training.
Understand STEM OPT eligibility for your field
Some health sciences degrees qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you 36 months total. Check whether your CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, and if so, prioritize employers enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for STEM OPT approval.
Physical Therapy Technician OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Physical Therapy Technician on OPT?
Yes, Physical Therapy Technician roles qualify for OPT as long as the position is directly related to your field of study. Your degree should be in a health sciences, kinesiology, or exercise science program. USCIS expects a clear connection between your coursework and your job duties, so document that relationship carefully when you report your employment to your DSO.
Do Physical Therapy Technician employers need to sponsor my OPT?
No. OPT is authorized by USCIS through your university, not by the employer. The employer does not file any petition or pay government fees to hire you on OPT. They only need to verify your Employment Authorization Document and complete standard I-9 documentation. This is one of the main advantages of OPT over visa categories that require employer petitions.
Where can I find Physical Therapy Technician jobs that accept OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and lists Physical Therapy Technician roles from employers open to hiring international students. Searching there filters out roles where work authorization requirements would disqualify you, saving significant time compared to applying broadly and encountering rejections late in the process.
Does working as a Physical Therapy Technician qualify me for a STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree's CIP code, not the job title itself. If your program, such as kinesiology or exercise science, appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, you may qualify for the 24-month extension. The employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before assuming you qualify, since not all health sciences programs are STEM-designated.
What happens to my OPT status if my Physical Therapy Technician contract ends?
You can remain in the United States during your OPT authorization period even without employment, but USCIS limits cumulative unemployment to 90 days on standard OPT and 150 days on STEM OPT. If your contract ends, report the change to your DSO promptly and begin your job search immediately. Exceeding the unemployment limit terminates your OPT status regardless of how much time remains on your EAD.
