Target infrastructure-heavy engineering teams
Companies running Kubernetes, Terraform, or large-scale cloud infrastructure are most likely to sponsor. These teams depend on platform engineers long-term, making them far more willing to invest in H-1B visa sponsorship than project-based roles.
Apply before your 12-month OPT expires
H-1B filing takes months. Start applying at least six months into your OPT so employers have time to prepare an LCA and petition before your authorization runs out. Timing matters more than most students realize.
Use your STEM OPT extension strategically
If your degree is in computer science, software engineering, or a related STEM field, you qualify for a 24-month extension. That gives you three H-1B lottery cycles, significantly improving your odds of selection.
Frame your skills around business impact
Platform engineers who can articulate how their infrastructure work reduced downtime, cut deployment times, or scaled systems are far easier for employers to justify sponsoring. Quantify your contributions in your resume and interviews.
Prioritize employers with a sponsorship track record
Look for companies that have filed H-1B petitions for platform or DevOps roles in previous years. A history of sponsorship is the strongest signal that an employer will support your visa process without hesitation.
Clarify sponsorship early, not at the offer stage
Raise OPT work authorization and your intent to seek H-1B sponsorship during the second or third interview round. Waiting until an offer is extended creates awkward last-minute withdrawals that waste both your time and theirs.
Platform Engineer OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Platform Engineer on OPT?
Yes. Platform Engineer roles qualify for F-1 OPT because the work is directly related to STEM fields like computer science, computer engineering, and information technology. Your OPT Employment Authorization Document authorizes full-time employment in roles consistent with your degree, and platform engineering almost always meets that standard.
Do Platform Engineer roles qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Platform engineering qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension when your degree is in an eligible field such as computer science, computer engineering, or information systems. Your employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify. With the extension, you get up to 36 months of total OPT, covering three consecutive H-1B lottery cycles.
How sponsorship-friendly is the Platform Engineer title for H-1B?
Platform Engineer is a well-established specialty occupation under H-1B standards because the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Employers in cloud infrastructure, SaaS, and financial services regularly sponsor this title. You can browse companies with a verified sponsorship history on Migrate Mate.
What OPT reporting requirements apply while working as a Platform Engineer?
You must report any change in employer, job title, or work location to your DSO within 10 days. This applies even if you switch from one platform engineering role to another. If you are on STEM OPT, your employer must also submit a formal training plan using Form I-983, and you must complete a self-evaluation every 12 months.
What if my Platform Engineer role is fully remote?
Remote work is permitted on OPT as long as the employment is legitimate, within the scope of your degree, and properly reported to your DSO. For STEM OPT, your employer's E-Verify participation applies at the company level rather than a specific office address, so full remote arrangements are generally acceptable with proper documentation on your I-983.
