Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as an Android Engineer
Target companies with active H-1B filing histories
Prioritize employers who have consistently filed H-1B petitions for software engineers. Companies with a track record of sponsoring Android engineers are far more likely to extend your status when OPT ends than those doing it for the first time.
Apply before your OPT start date if possible
Hiring timelines for Android roles average six to ten weeks. Starting your search two to three months before OPT begins gives you time to clear interviews and onboard without putting pressure on your authorization window.
Highlight STEM OPT eligibility upfront
If your degree is in computer science, software engineering, or a related STEM field, mention your 36-month OPT eligibility early. This directly reduces employer H-1B lottery risk and removes the main objection most hiring managers raise.
Build a portfolio with shipped Android apps
Employers sponsoring OPT students want low-risk hires. A Google Play portfolio with real users signals production-level competence and shortens the evaluation process, making you a stronger candidate than someone with only coursework or side projects.
Understand the CAP-exempt H-1B path as a backup
Universities, nonprofits, and government research labs are CAP-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery risk. These employers are worth considering if your OPT timeline does not align with the April H-1B filing window.
Be specific about your OPT end date and STEM extension eligibility
Ambiguity about your authorization timeline slows decisions. Know your exact OPT expiration date, whether you qualify for STEM extension, and your STEM extension deadline before any recruiter conversation about work authorization.
Android Engineer OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Android Engineer jobs commonly offer OPT sponsorship?
Yes. Android engineering is classified as a specialty occupation under USCIS guidelines, which makes it one of the more straightforward roles for H-1B sponsorship. Large consumer tech companies, startups, and enterprise software firms all hire Android engineers on OPT regularly. Migrate Mate filters specifically for OPT-friendly Android roles so you are not sorting through listings that exclude work authorization holders.
Does my STEM OPT extension apply to Android Engineer roles?
It does, provided your degree is in a qualifying STEM field such as computer science, software engineering, or information technology. STEM OPT extends your work authorization from 12 to 36 months and requires your employer to be E-Verify enrolled. Most mid-size and larger tech companies already meet this requirement, so it rarely creates a barrier for Android engineering positions.
What happens to my OPT status if I switch Android engineering jobs?
You can change employers during OPT as long as the new role is directly related to your degree field and you report the change to your DSO within ten days. Android engineering typically satisfies this requirement for computer science and software engineering graduates. Your 60-day grace period begins if you lose your job, so having a job offer before leaving your current role protects your status.
Can I work as a contract or freelance Android Engineer on OPT?
Self-employment and independent contracting are permitted on OPT if you are actively engaged in work directly related to your degree and can document it clearly. You must be generating income and doing substantive Android engineering work, not simply holding a company registration. This is more complex to document for DSO reporting and STEM OPT compliance, so most OPT students find traditional W-2 employment simpler to maintain status.
What types of employers hire Android Engineers on OPT most consistently?
Consumer app companies, fintech firms, healthcare technology companies, and large enterprise software organizations have the highest volume of Android engineering hires on OPT. These employers typically have existing H-1B sponsorship pipelines and immigration counsel on retainer, which streamlines the process significantly. Browse Android Engineer roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers are actively hiring OPT students right now.
