How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Front End Software Engineer
Filter by STEM OPT eligibility from the start
Front end engineering falls under CIP code 11.0701, which qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm your degree is STEM-designated before applying so you can accurately represent your full authorization window to employers.
Lead with your framework depth, not just your tool list
Hiring managers for front end roles care about React, Vue, or Angular depth far more than breadth. Show production experience with one framework in detail rather than listing every technology you have touched in a course project.
Target companies with existing front end OPT sponsorship history
Employers who have sponsored front end engineers before understand the process and are far less likely to withdraw an offer over paperwork concerns. Prioritize these companies early in your search to avoid wasting time on unfamiliar sponsors.
Build a portfolio that signals production-ready work
A deployed project with real users, documented performance optimizations, or accessibility improvements signals you are job-ready without training. Recruiters reviewing OPT candidates pay close attention to portfolios because they cannot rely on a referral network yet.
Clarify who handles E-Verify before accepting an offer
STEM OPT employers must be E-Verify enrolled. Ask HR early in the process whether the company is enrolled and whether your specific work site qualifies, especially if the role is remote or at a client location rather than headquarters.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Front End Software Engineer on OPT?
Yes. Front end software engineering is a qualifying STEM field under most F-1 OPT programs, and roles in this category are among the most commonly sponsored for OPT students. Your employment must be directly related to your degree field, so a computer science, software engineering, or related STEM degree typically satisfies that requirement. You can browse open roles on Migrate Mate to find employers actively accepting OPT candidates.
Does a Front End Software Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It does, provided your degree is classified under an eligible STEM CIP code such as computer science or computer engineering. The STEM extension adds 24 months to your initial 12-month OPT period, giving you up to three years total. Your employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify for the extension to be valid. Confirm both your degree classification and your employer's E-Verify status before submitting your STEM extension application to your DSO.
What visa sponsorship options exist after OPT for this role?
The H-1B cap-subject lottery is the most common pathway for front end engineers. Software roles generally qualify as specialty occupations, which is the H-1B eligibility threshold. Some employers, particularly in finance and consulting, also sponsor O-1 visas for engineers with exceptional portfolios or open source contributions. A smaller number of companies will sponsor an EB-2 or EB-3 green card directly from OPT, though this is more common after one to two years of employment.
How much time does an employer need to sponsor a Front End Software Engineer on OPT?
For the initial OPT period, no employer sponsorship is required beyond completing your I-983 training plan for the STEM extension. For H-1B sponsorship, the employer needs to file by the April 1 registration deadline for employment starting October 1. If you start OPT in mid-year, make sure your STEM extension timeline aligns with the H-1B cap year so there is no gap in work authorization between your extension expiring and an H-1B approval.
Are front end engineering roles harder to get sponsored than back end or full stack roles?
Front end roles are generally sponsored at similar rates to full stack positions and at slightly higher rates than back end roles at startups, where product-facing engineers are often prioritized. The stronger your demonstrated experience with React or similar frameworks, the less friction you will face around sponsorship conversations. Specializations in performance engineering, accessibility, or design systems tend to strengthen your candidacy further.
