Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as an iOS Engineer
Target companies with active H-1B filing history
Employers who have filed H-1B visa petitions for engineering roles in previous years are far more likely to sponsor again. Search OFLC disclosure data to verify a company's track record before investing time in their interview process.
Apply before your OPT clock starts running low
Hiring timelines for iOS Engineer roles often stretch 8 to 12 weeks. Start applying at least three to four months before your OPT expires so your employer has time to file an H-1B or STEM extension without rushing.
Emphasize your Swift and UIKit expertise upfront
Sponsoring employers need to justify the specialty occupation requirement. A strong portfolio demonstrating proficiency in Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, and App Store deployment makes the case that your role demands specific technical credentials.
Ask about sponsorship before the offer stage
Raise the question of H-1B sponsorship during your second or third interview round, not after you receive an offer. This avoids wasting both your time and the employer's if sponsorship is not something they support.
Make sure your employer files your STEM OPT extension on time
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to support a STEM OPT extension. Confirm this early, because your extension application must be filed with USCIS before your current OPT EAD expires or you lose authorization.
Frame your degree field clearly on your resume
iOS Engineer roles qualify as specialty occupations when tied to a computer science or software engineering degree. State your major explicitly on your resume so recruiters and hiring managers can confirm OPT eligibility without guessing.
iOS Engineer OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an iOS Engineer on F-1 OPT?
Yes. iOS Engineer roles qualify for F-1 OPT because they are specialty occupation positions directly related to computer science and software engineering degrees. Your work must be in a field related to your major, and your employer does not need to take any action to authorize your initial 12-month OPT period beyond being E-Verify enrolled if you plan to apply for a STEM extension later.
Am I eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension as an iOS Engineer?
Yes, provided your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as computer science, computer engineering, or software engineering, and your employer is enrolled in the E-Verify program. The STEM extension must be applied for before your current OPT EAD expires, and your employer must sign a formal training plan. This gives you up to 36 months of total OPT work authorization.
Do iOS Engineer employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas?
Many technology companies hiring iOS Engineers have consistent H-1B sponsorship histories, particularly mid-size and large employers in consumer tech, fintech, and enterprise software. Smaller startups vary widely. The most reliable way to find iOS Engineer roles from verified sponsoring employers is through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for companies willing to support international candidates.
Does contract or freelance iOS work count toward my OPT?
Contract work can count toward OPT if the arrangement meets USCIS requirements: the work must be directly related to your degree, you must work at least 20 hours per week, and the nature of the role must qualify as a specialty occupation. Self-employment is permitted on OPT, but you must be actively engaged in a genuine business operation. Consult your DSO before taking on contract or freelance arrangements to confirm compliance.
What should I look for in an iOS Engineer job posting as an OPT student?
Look for postings that list a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field as a requirement, not merely a preference, since this language supports the specialty occupation determination needed for H-1B sponsorship. Also check whether the employer has E-Verify enrollment if you anticipate needing a STEM extension. Migrate Mate surfaces iOS Engineer roles from employers already open to OPT and visa sponsorship, saving you from filtering through roles that will not work for your situation.
