Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Product Owner
Verify the role qualifies for STEM OPT
Product Owner positions typically fall under CIP codes for computer science or information systems. Confirm your employer's STEM designation before accepting an offer, since this determines whether you qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension.
Lead with product outcomes, not just processes
Employers weighing visa sponsorship want evidence of impact. Frame your experience around shipped features, adoption metrics, and revenue influence rather than ceremonies like sprint planning. Concrete outcomes reduce perceived hiring risk for international candidates.
Target companies with established H-1B sponsorship track records
Mid-size and large tech companies with dedicated HR and legal teams are far more likely to sponsor. Prioritize organizations that have sponsored H-1B visas in prior years, as they already have established processes and vendor relationships.
Get Pragmatic Product Manager or CSPO certified
Certifications like CSPO or PMC signal product credibility to hiring managers unfamiliar with international candidates. They also strengthen H-1B specialty occupation arguments later, since they document formal training in a recognized professional discipline.
Address the OPT timeline directly with recruiters
Bring up your OPT status and timeline before the offer stage, not after. Recruiters appreciate transparency, and it lets you quickly identify whether the company sponsors H-1B visas before you invest significant time in their process.
Build internal advocates before the H-1B decision
H-1B sponsorship is often approved by a hiring manager's direct leadership, not just HR. During OPT, establish a strong performance record and cultivate relationships with senior stakeholders who can champion your sponsorship case when the time comes.
Product Owner OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Owner role qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
It depends on the employer's E-Verify enrollment and the role's classification. Many Product Owner positions at technology companies qualify under CIP codes for computer science, information systems, or engineering management. Your employer must be E-Verify enrolled and the role must directly relate to your STEM degree for the extension to apply.
How do I find Product Owner jobs that sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters specifically for employers willing to sponsor F-1 OPT and H-1B candidates, so you're not wasting applications on companies that won't consider international hires. Searching there narrows your focus to roles where sponsorship is already part of the employer's hiring plan, which significantly improves your conversion rate.
Is Product Owner considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
USCIS has approved H-1B petitions for Product Owners when the role requires a specific bachelor's degree in a field like computer science, information systems, or business analysis. Generic job descriptions that accept any degree can weaken the specialty occupation argument. The strength of the petition depends heavily on how the employer documents the role's degree requirements.
Can I work as a Product Owner on OPT if my degree is in business rather than a technical field?
Yes. A business degree in fields such as information systems, management information systems, or business analytics is directly related to most Product Owner roles and supports standard OPT authorization. However, STEM OPT extension eligibility depends on whether your specific CIP code appears on the Department of Homeland Security's designated STEM fields list.
What should I do if my OPT expires before my employer files the H-1B?
If your STEM OPT extension is approved and timely filed, you can work continuously through cap-gap coverage while the H-1B petition is pending. If you're on standard OPT without a STEM extension, the window is tighter. Start the H-1B conversation with your employer at least six months before your OPT expires to leave enough time for preparation and filing.
