Research Product Manager Jobs for OPT Students
Research Product Manager jobs on OPT require employers willing to sponsor or extend work authorization, since most roles involve leading complex research-to-product cycles that extend well beyond a typical 12-month OPT window. STEM OPT extension eligibility depends on your degree field, so engineering, computer science, and data science graduates have a clear advantage here.

INTRODUCTION
The AI Infrastructure Community Development program needs a technical contractor to bridge the gap between world-class academic research and large-scale AI accelerator infrastructure. You will be the primary technical point of contact for university researchers onboarding onto a cloud-based AI compute platform, specifically focusing on distributed training using GPUs and specialized AI accelerators. Additionally, you will serve as a key technical coordinator for our 2026 DevLab series, ensuring that the next generation of AI researchers has the hands-on environment they need to build with modern open-source ML frameworks and compiler ecosystems.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Scope:
Academic Technical Onboarding
- Cloud Concierge: Guide research teams through the initial setup of cloud projects, billing (including research credits), and identity and access management.
- Architecture Advisory: Provide “best-fit” hardware recommendations (e.g., when to use high-end GPUs vs. specialized AI accelerators) based on the researcher’s model architecture and workload requirements.
- Platform Enablement: Train users on cloud consoles, managed ML services, and container orchestration platforms for distributed training and large-scale experimentation.
Performance & Scaling Support
- Hardware Optimization: Assist researchers in debugging distributed training environments across frameworks such as JAX, PyTorch, and TensorFlow, including accelerator configuration and performance tuning.
- Quota & Resource Management: Act as a liaison for high-priority academic projects to ensure access to necessary accelerator capacity for time-sensitive research milestones (e.g., major conference deadlines).
Event Coordination (DevLabs 2026)
- Technical Lab Design: Assist engineering teams in building and testing hands-on codelabs for the June 2026 DevLabs.
- Logistics & Community: Manage the event interest pipeline and potentially lead technical breakout sessions during the event.
- Feedback Loop: Document researcher pain points and feature requests to improve the developer experience across the accelerator and open ML ecosystem.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Cloud Infrastructure: 3+ years of experience with major cloud platforms (compute instances, object storage, identity, and access management).
- Accelerator Expertise: Hands-on experience configuring and managing NVIDIA GPUs and/or AI accelerators in a cloud or HPC environment.
- Framework Knowledge: Familiarity with JAX, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar ML frameworks. Experience with CUDA or accelerator compilers is helpful.
- Academic Context: Understanding of the academic research lifecycle (grant cycles, publication deadlines, collaborative lab structures).
- Education: B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field. Equivalent experience also considered.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience writing or troubleshooting distributed training configurations (e.g., multi-host, sharded workloads).
- Previous experience organizing technical workshops, hackathons, or developer bootcamps.
- Familiarity with Slurm or other HPC schedulers commonly used by academic institutions.
COMPENSATION
- Estimated Min Rate: $50.00
- Estimated Max Rate: $60.00

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Research Product Manager
Target STEM-designated degree fields
If your degree is in computer science, engineering, statistics, or a related STEM field, you qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Lead with this in applications. Employers see it as three years of authorization, not one.
Prioritize companies with active research divisions
Large tech companies, biotech firms, and academic-affiliated organizations run structured research programs and hire product managers to bridge research and commercialization. These employers are far more likely to have OPT sponsorship experience than early-stage startups.
Frame your research background as a product differentiator
Research PMs who can read a paper, synthesize findings, and translate them into a product roadmap are rare. Highlight this explicitly in your resume and cover letter. It justifies the sponsorship investment to hiring managers unfamiliar with OPT.
Verify your employer's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm this before signing an offer. If they're not enrolled, you cannot use the extension, even if the employer is otherwise willing to support your status.
Connect your graduate research directly to the role
Hiring managers for research PM roles want to see that you've operated at the intersection of research and product before. Reference specific projects, methodologies, or publications from your graduate work that map to the company's research focus.

Can I work as a Research Product Manager on OPT?
Yes, as long as the role is directly related to your degree field. Research Product Manager positions typically qualify for students with degrees in computer science, engineering, data science, cognitive science, or a related STEM or research-intensive field. You'll need to ensure your job description and degree connection are clearly documented for your DSO.
Does a Research Product Manager role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. If you hold a degree in a STEM-designated field and the Research PM role falls within that field of study, you're likely eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Your employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm both conditions before assuming you qualify.
How do I find Research Product Manager jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and surfaces Research PM roles from employers with active sponsorship history. General job boards don't filter for OPT eligibility, so you spend most of your time applying to roles that won't move forward. Searching on Migrate Mate removes that friction from the process.
Do Research Product Manager roles typically lead to H-1B sponsorship?
Many do, particularly at large tech companies, research labs, and enterprise software firms that routinely hire PMs. These organizations have established immigration processes and sponsor H-1B petitions each year. Smaller companies or those new to hiring international talent may be willing but less prepared. Ask about their immigration sponsorship history directly during the offer stage.
What degree fields support a Research Product Manager OPT job match?
The most straightforward matches are computer science, human-computer interaction, biomedical engineering, cognitive science, data science, and information systems. MBA graduates with a STEM undergraduate degree can sometimes qualify if the role aligns with the STEM degree, not the MBA. Your DSO can confirm whether a specific role qualifies under your degree's CIP code.
