How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Facilities Project Manager
Target industries with ongoing capital projects
Healthcare systems, universities, and corporate real estate teams run continuous facilities programs that justify long-term hires. These employers plan budgets years out, making them more willing to invest in H-1B sponsorship for a proven project manager.
Quantify project scope in your resume
Employers evaluate sponsorship ROI. Listing square footage managed, budget overseen, and number of contractors coordinated gives hiring managers concrete evidence your contribution is worth the cost and effort of filing an H-1B petition.
Pursue PMP or LEED credentials during OPT
Certifications like PMP or LEED AP signal professional commitment and reduce the perceived risk of sponsoring you. Many employers require one of these for senior facilities roles, so earning it early strengthens both your application and your sponsorship case.
Apply to employers with an established HR and legal infrastructure
Large facility management firms, hospital networks, and government contractors typically have in-house immigration counsel and standard sponsorship workflows. Smaller contractors may want to sponsor but lack the process to do it efficiently.
Use STEM OPT extension if your degree qualifies
Degrees in civil engineering, construction engineering, or mechanical engineering are STEM-designated, giving you 36 months of authorized work. That timeline covers two H-1B lottery cycles, significantly improving your odds of securing sponsorship before OPT expires.
Engage hiring managers on capital planning timelines
During interviews, ask about multi-year projects in the pipeline. Framing the conversation around long-term program needs positions you as a continued investment, not a short-term hire, which is exactly the argument that makes sponsorship conversations easier to initiate.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Facilities Project Manager roles typically qualify for STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your undergraduate or graduate degree, not the job title itself. If your degree is in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, construction engineering, or a related STEM field, you qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. A facilities management or business degree generally does not qualify, so confirm your CIP code with your DSO before counting on the extension.
Is Facilities Project Manager considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field such as civil engineering, architecture, or construction management. Roles that accept any degree or have no defined field requirement can face challenges meeting the specialty occupation standard. The job description and your employer's stated requirements both matter when USCIS evaluates the petition.
Where can I find Facilities Project Manager jobs that offer OPT sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Facilities Project Manager positions from employers that sponsor work visas, so you can filter specifically for OPT-friendly roles rather than applying broadly and asking about sponsorship later. Targeting employers who have an established sponsorship track record saves time and avoids situations where a willing employer lacks the process to follow through.
Can I work for a facilities management contractor on OPT if I'm placed at a client site?
Yes, but your employment relationship must be with the sponsoring contractor, not the client. On OPT, your employer of record is who signs your paycheck and supervises your work. If the arrangement looks more like the client is directing your day-to-day work independently, it can raise questions about whether you're working in authorized employment. Discuss the structure with your DSO before accepting.
What should I do if my OPT authorization expires before my H-1B takes effect?
If your employer files your H-1B petition by April 1 for an October 1 start date and you have a STEM OPT extension, you're likely covered by cap-gap protection, which automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. Without a STEM extension, you need your OPT to remain valid through the April filing date. Work with your DSO and your employer's immigration counsel as early as possible to map out the exact timeline.
