OPT RN Home Health Jobs
RN Home Health jobs are open to F-1 OPT students with an active Employment Authorization Document and a valid state RN license. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in RN Home Health
Confirm your state RN license before applying
Home health agencies require a valid RN license in the state where patients are located. Apply for licensure by endorsement early. Processing can take six to twelve weeks, which can eat into your OPT window significantly.
Target agencies with established visa sponsorship history
Large home health networks like Amedisys, LHC Group, and Bayada have sponsored H-1B visa and EB-3 nurses before. Smaller private-pay agencies rarely have legal infrastructure for sponsorship. Prioritize employers with a documented history of international nurse hiring.
Understand that nursing is not STEM OPT eligible
Nursing CIP codes are not on the STEM Designated Degree Program list. You have 12 months of OPT, not 36. Start sponsorship conversations with employers within the first 60 days of authorization, not the last.
Ask about EB-3 sponsorship, not just H-1B
Many home health employers sponsor nurses through the EB-3 immigrant visa rather than H-1B. EB-3 does not require a lottery, which makes it a more reliable path. Ask HR specifically whether they support permanent resident sponsorship for nursing staff.
Highlight acute care and specialized clinical experience
Home health agencies prioritize RNs with experience in wound care, IV therapy, or chronic disease management. Document these skills explicitly in your resume. Specialized competencies make you a stronger sponsorship candidate because turnover risk is lower.
Clarify the employment model before accepting an offer
Some home health agencies classify field nurses as 1099 contractors, not W-2 employees. OPT requires employer-employee relationships. Independent contractor arrangements are not compliant with OPT work authorization requirements. Confirm W-2 status before signing anything.
RN Home Health OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an RN in home health on F-1 OPT?
Yes, if your degree is in nursing or a directly related health sciences field and your OPT is authorized for that field. You must have an active Employment Authorization Document and a valid state RN license where you'll be working. Because nursing is not STEM-designated, your OPT period is 12 months, so securing sponsorship early is critical.
Where can I find RN Home Health jobs that sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles open to OPT and visa-sponsored candidates, which saves time compared to sorting through general postings. Large regional home health networks are more likely to have HR and legal teams experienced with international nurse hiring than small independent agencies, so focus your search there first.
Does home health RN work qualify for STEM OPT extension?
No. Nursing degree programs are not included on the STEM Designated Degree Program list maintained by the Department of Homeland Security. RN Home Health roles fall under nursing CIP codes, which are excluded. You are limited to the standard 12-month post-completion OPT period, with no 24-month extension available.
Can I work for multiple home health agencies on OPT?
Yes, but with important conditions. OPT allows concurrent employment, meaning you can work for more than one employer simultaneously as long as each position is directly related to your degree field and you work at least 20 hours per week in total. Each agency must be a W-2 employer, not a 1099 contractor arrangement, to maintain OPT compliance.
What visa sponsorship options exist for home health RNs after OPT ends?
The two most common paths are H-1B cap-subject sponsorship and EB-3 immigrant visa sponsorship. H-1B requires winning the annual lottery, which adds uncertainty. EB-3 does not have a lottery but involves a longer process including PERM labor certification. Many home health employers who hire international nurses prefer EB-3 because it avoids lottery risk entirely.
