Do Salesforce jobs qualify for STEM OPT?
Salesforce roles can qualify for STEM OPT if your underlying degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, information systems, or software engineering, and the role directly applies that technical degree. The platform-specific nature of the work needs to be framed in terms of your technical background rather than just the tool itself. Your DSO can confirm whether your specific degree and role combination meets the field-of-study requirement.
Do I need a Salesforce certification to get hired on OPT?
A certification is not required but significantly strengthens your candidacy. The Salesforce Certified Administrator and Salesforce Certified Platform Developer credentials are the most commonly requested by employers. Many OPT candidates use the period between graduation and their OPT start date to earn certifications, which demonstrates initiative and makes the field-of-study connection clearer on a resume.
Which types of companies hire Salesforce professionals on OPT?
Salesforce consulting firms and implementation partners are among the highest-volume OPT hirers for Salesforce roles, followed by large enterprises in financial services, healthcare, retail, and technology that run Salesforce in-house. Consulting firms in particular have established OPT hiring programs and are familiar with the process. Independent software vendors building on the Salesforce platform are also active hirers for OPT candidates with development skills.
What is the career path for a Salesforce professional on OPT aiming for H-1B?
Starting as a Salesforce Administrator or Junior Developer on OPT, demonstrating value over 12 to 36 months, and building toward a sponsorship conversation well before the OPT period ends is the most common path. Companies with a history of Salesforce H-1B petitions are your best targets, since they have already made this investment for similar roles. The more specialized and technical your Salesforce skills become, the stronger your case for H-1B sponsorship.
Can I work as a Salesforce contractor on OPT?
During the standard 12-month OPT, contract arrangements are possible as long as the work is directly related to your field of study. On the STEM OPT extension, the rules are stricter and require your employer to supervise your work directly rather than having a client or end-user company oversee you. Full-time employment with a qualifying employer is the safest path on STEM OPT, particularly for roles where you want the employer to eventually sponsor your H-1B.
