How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Software Consultant
Verify your degree field supports the role
Software Consultant positions typically require a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related technical field. Confirm your degree aligns with the job description before applying, since USCIS evaluates degree-to-role fit when authorizing OPT employment.
Confirm STEM OPT eligibility early
Most Software Consultant roles at accredited employers qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Check that your degree program is on the STEM Designated Degree Program List before your initial OPT period ends to avoid gaps in work authorization.
Ask about E-Verify enrollment during outreach
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Raise this early in conversations with hiring managers or recruiters, not after receiving an offer, so you can confirm eligibility without creating awkwardness at the offer stage.
Target consulting firms with established OPT processes
Large consulting firms and technology-focused staffing companies often have dedicated HR teams experienced with OPT work authorization and I-983 training plan requirements. These employers are less likely to withdraw offers due to authorization complexity or unfamiliarity with the process.
Understand how consulting structures affect your OPT
Some Software Consultant roles place you at client sites rather than the employer's office. Your OPT authorization is tied to your primary employer, not the client. Make sure your employment authorization documents reflect the correct legal employer entity before starting work.
Track your OPT end date against H-1B lottery timing
H-1B registration opens in March each year, with an October 1 start date for selected petitions. If your OPT expires before October 1 and you're not selected, you'll need a cap-gap extension or alternative visa. Plan your job search timeline accordingly.

Does a Software Consultant job qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Most Software Consultant roles qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree is in computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a related STEM field on the Department of Homeland Security's designated list. The employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify and willing to sign the I-983 training plan. Confirm both conditions with the employer before accepting an offer.
Can I work as a Software Consultant on OPT at a client site?
Yes, but your OPT authorization is tied to your direct employer, not the end client where you're placed. The employer of record who signed your offer letter is responsible for your I-983 training plan and E-Verify enrollment. Make sure your employment documents accurately reflect the legal employer, since working under an incorrect entity can create compliance issues with your DSO and USCIS.
How do I find Software Consultant jobs that sponsor OPT and H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate lists Software Consultant roles from employers with a verified history of OPT and H-1B sponsorship, so you can filter out positions that won't support your work authorization. Searching there saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations late in the process, often after multiple interview rounds.
What should I include in my I-983 training plan for a Software Consultant role?
Your I-983 training plan should describe the technical skills you'll develop, the specific projects you'll work on, and how the work connects to your STEM degree. For Software Consultant roles, this typically includes systems analysis, software implementation, client-facing technical problem solving, and relevant technologies used on the job. Your employer's HR or immigration team usually prepares this, but reviewing it for accuracy is your responsibility.
What happens to my OPT status if I'm between consulting contracts?
F-1 OPT regulations allow up to 90 days of unemployment during standard OPT and up to 150 days during the STEM OPT extension. If you're between consulting engagements through the same employer, you're generally still considered employed. If your employer relationship ends entirely, the unemployment clock starts. Notify your DSO promptly if your employment situation changes to keep your SEVIS record accurate.
