OUR APPROACH TO FLEXIBLE WORK
With Flex Work, we’re combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.

Target consulting firms with established H-1B track records
Large consulting firms like Deloitte, Accenture, and Cognizant file H-1B visa petitions regularly for technical consultants. Prioritize companies with consistent sponsorship histories rather than firms sponsoring for the first time during your OPT window.
Frame your degree field around the specialty occupation standard
Technical Consultant roles must qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B eligibility. Emphasize how your specific degree, whether in computer science, engineering, or information systems, directly supports the technical work you'll perform for clients.
Start H-1B conversations before your OPT year ends
The H-1B lottery opens in March for an October start date. If your OPT expires before October, confirm your employer will file early enough that your cap-gap coverage keeps you authorized through the transition without any gap.
Pursue STEM OPT extension before your initial 12 months expire
File your STEM OPT extension at least 90 days before your initial OPT end date. Technical Consultant roles at qualifying STEM employers give you 24 additional months, significantly expanding the window for H-1B sponsorship attempts.
Clarify consulting placement arrangements with your employer early
If your employer places you at client sites, confirm they remain your legal employer of record throughout. Third-party placement arrangements can complicate your OPT employer verification requirements and create status issues if not structured correctly.
Document client deliverables and technical scope on your resume
Sponsoring employers need to demonstrate the role requires specialized knowledge. Quantify your technical contributions, platforms implemented, and project outcomes so your record clearly supports a specialty occupation argument if USCIS scrutinizes the petition.
Technical Consultant OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Consultant role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your employer's STEM designation, not just the job title. If your employer is enrolled in E-Verify and your degree is in a qualifying STEM field, such as computer science, information systems, or engineering, the role can qualify. Confirm your employer's E-Verify status before accepting an offer, since not all consulting firms are enrolled.
Can I work as a Technical Consultant at a client site while on OPT?
Yes, but the consulting firm that hired you must remain your employer of record for OPT purposes. You report your primary employer to your DSO, not the end client. If the staffing arrangement changes, such as a direct transfer to the client, you may need to update your employment record. Clarify the employment structure in writing before you start.
How do I find Technical Consultant jobs that sponsor OPT and H-1B?
Migrate Mate filters jobs by visa sponsorship willingness, so you can browse Technical Consultant openings from employers who have sponsored international candidates before. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations late in the process.
What happens to my OPT authorization if my consulting engagement ends between client projects?
OPT requires you to maintain qualifying employment, but the rules allow for brief gaps. You can accrue up to 90 days of unemployment on standard OPT, and up to 150 days on STEM OPT extension. A bench period between engagements counts toward that limit, so notify your DSO if a gap extends beyond a few weeks.
Do consulting firms typically sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Consultants?
Many mid-size and large consulting firms do sponsor H-1B petitions for technical consultants, particularly for roles requiring specialized platform knowledge or engineering skills. Boutique firms and staffing-only agencies are less consistent. The strongest indicator is the firm's H-1B filing history, which is publicly available through Department of Labor disclosure data.
