How do I get a physician job in Durham?
The strongest path into Durham's physician market runs through its academic medical centers, large health systems, and specialty group practices, particularly those tied to Duke Health and the broader Research Triangle. Candidates with fellowship training, board certification in high-demand specialties such as oncology, cardiology, or primary care, and experience in academic or teaching environments tend to stand out. Networking through Duke's affiliated departments and community health organizations also opens doors here.
Which companies hire physicians in Durham?
Employers hiring physicians in Durham right now include Duke Health, Avance Care, and IMA Medical Group - Millennium Physician Group, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Durham's hiring landscape is shaped heavily by large academic health systems, community hospital networks, and multi-specialty group practices serving both the city and the surrounding Research Triangle population.
Are there remote physician jobs in Durham?
Yes, though remote opportunities are limited for most clinical physician roles that require direct patient contact and on-site care. About 17% of physician openings tied to Durham are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those openings tend to be in utilization review, telehealth consultation, and medical director or administrative medicine roles rather than traditional clinical practice.
How can I get a physician job in Durham with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point in Durham is a residency or fellowship program affiliated with Duke University Health System or the VA Medical Center on Erwin Road, which regularly place early-career physicians into staff roles. Community health centers serving Durham's underserved neighborhoods also hire physicians newer to independent practice. Demonstrating interest in primary care, global health, or community medicine gives early-career candidates a concrete edge in this market.
