Motional's Pittsburgh office is located in the new Hazelwood Green development, a culmination of the city's goal of restoring an economic driver to the neighborhood in a thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable way. With views along the Monongahela river, the Pittsburgh office is in the heart of this new state of the art development.
Mission Summary:
Our Design Release Engineering team, within the Vehicle Platform Engineering group, is seeking a highly motivated Staff Engineer to own the engineering integration, program management tracking, and cross-functional alignment between Motional's Autonomous Driving System (ADS) and our vehicle manufacturer (OEM) partner's base vehicle platform.
This role serves as the central orchestrator for the end-to-end hardware integration required to marry our autonomous driving technology with the base vehicle. You will ensure robust technical execution, manage OEM and internal technical coordination and milestones, and drive program delivery that meets all performance, cost, and timing objectives.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Own the complete vehicle hardware integration of the autonomous driving system with the base vehicle platform, managing shared requirements and Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and ensuring seamless mechanical, electrical, and network compatibility.
- Drive technical discussions and cross-functional alignment between the vehicle manufacturer's engineering teams and internal Motional technical teams to coordinate vehicle platform requirements, design, and component integration.
- Lead technical and programmatic execution for the integration lifecycle, establishing, monitoring, and managing the master integration schedule against vehicle-level design milestones, build events, and gate assessments.
- Oversee the generation, alignment, release, and change management of engineering documentation, specifications, and data exchanges between Motional and the OEM, tracking impacts to cost, timing, and scope.
- Partner on the development and execution of platform testing and certification plans, tracking vehicle platform testing schedules and ensuring successful validation against system-level performance targets on time.
- Lead technical program reviews, gate assessments, and master timing milestone tracking, proactively developing risk mitigation plans to ensure platform maturity aligns with vehicle build timelines.
- Provide regular, data-driven status updates to technical and program leadership regarding design and integration maturity, test progress, open cross-functional issues, and key project milestone metrics.
What We're Looking For:
- 8+ years of experience in automotive hardware design, release engineering, or vehicle integration, with direct experience managing complex OEM/tier-supplier vehicle programs or platform integrations.
- Prior experience working within an automotive OEM, or managing large-scale platform integrations as a strategic Tier 1 partner.
- Demonstrated experience driving multi-disciplinary engineering activities, cross-functional milestone tracking, and risk mitigation strategies throughout the full automotive product lifecycle.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Systems Engineering (or a related field).
- Deep technical understanding of core vehicle architectures, network topologies (e.g., CAN-FD, automotive ethernet), and electrical/mechanical packaging constraints.
- Fundamental knowledge of automotive engineering documentation, validation processes, and quality standards (including DVP&R, DFMEA, and PFMEA).
- Familiarity with CAD systems (e.g., NX, CATIA), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems (including requirement management tools such as Polarion), and engineering release workflows.
- Strong understanding of vehicle integration, packaging, assembly processes, and functional safety standards (ISO 26262).
- Proven ability to lead highly complex initiatives, manage both internal and external organizational stakeholders, and execute to aggressive program timelines with minimal oversight.
Bonus Points:
- Professional proficiency or fluency in Korean to facilitate direct technical and program communication with international vehicle manufacturing partners.
This role is based in our Pittsburgh office and requires in-office days each week.

Platform Engineer Jobs in Pittsburgh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a platform engineer job in Pittsburgh?
The strongest entry point in Pittsburgh is through the technology and healthcare IT sectors, where demand for platform engineers is highest. Focusing on employers in Oakland's medical and university corridor or the Strip District's growing tech scene gives you an edge. Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, or cloud platforms like AWS and Azure is what Pittsburgh hiring managers consistently prioritize over credentials alone.
Which companies hire platform engineers in Pittsburgh?
Employers hiring platform engineers in Pittsburgh right now include Stack AV, Smith+Nephew, and Duolingo, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Pittsburgh's hiring base mixes large healthcare systems and financial institutions with a growing tier of tech-forward mid-size firms, giving candidates a wide range of environments to target.
Are there remote platform engineer jobs in Pittsburgh?
Yes, platform engineering is well-suited to remote and hybrid arrangements because the work centers on infrastructure tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud environments rather than on-site hardware. About 57% of platform engineer openings tied to Pittsburgh are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting broader industry norms. Cloud and automation-focused roles tend to offer the most flexibility, while roles tied to regulated industries like healthcare or finance often require at least partial on-site presence.
How can I get a platform engineer job in Pittsburgh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Pittsburgh is through a junior DevOps or site reliability engineer role at one of the city's many healthcare IT vendors or regional financial technology firms, where teams often hire and develop early-career candidates. Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh both produce strong pipelines, so employers in Oakland are accustomed to considering candidates still building their cloud or infrastructure portfolios. Earning a cloud certification and contributing to open-source infrastructure projects strengthens a Pittsburgh application significantly.
Which industries hire the most platform engineers in Pittsburgh?
Most platform engineer openings in Pittsburgh sit in Technology & Software, Automotive, and Medical Devices, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Pittsburgh's legacy in healthcare, finance, and its expanding university-driven tech ecosystem create consistent demand for platform engineers who can manage scalable, secure infrastructure across complex organizations.
