Portfolio Analyst Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a portfolio analyst in California?
Most portfolio analysts in California enter the field with a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or a quantitative discipline, followed by the CFA program, which is the most widely recognized credential among California asset managers and institutional investors. California does not require a state-issued license for portfolio analysts in most settings, though roles involving direct investment advice may require a FINRA Series 65 or Series 66 registration. Large California investment firms typically recruit through campus programs at UCLA, UC Berkeley, and USC.
How much do portfolio analysts make in California?
Portfolio analysts in California earn a median of about $109,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,840 for the lowest 10% to over $198,280 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire portfolio analysts in California?
Employers hiring portfolio analysts in California right now include Applied Materials, BlackRock, and Oaktree Capital Management, L.P., based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of venture capital firms, insurance companies, and public pension funds such as CalPERS and CalSTRS creates consistent demand across a wide range of employer types.
Which California cities have the most portfolio analyst jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Santa Clara have the most portfolio analyst openings in California. San Francisco dominates due to its dense cluster of asset management firms, hedge funds, and fintech companies, while Los Angeles draws hiring from entertainment industry endowments, private equity, and large insurance carriers, and San Diego's growing biotech investment sector and presence of firms like Pacific Life sustain steady demand there.
Are there remote portfolio analyst jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many finance roles. About 21% of portfolio analyst openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the desk-based, data-driven nature of the work. Research, performance reporting, and quantitative modeling tasks translate well to remote settings, while client-facing portfolio management roles and positions at large institutional investors more commonly require on-site presence in San Francisco or Los Angeles.
How can I get hired as a portfolio analyst in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior analyst or investment operations associate role at a California-based asset manager or bank, where you support senior analysts while building modeling skills. Firms like Wells Fargo, Charles Schwab, and Fidelity run structured new-graduate programs in California that hire candidates without prior investment experience. Completing the first CFA exam level before applying signals commitment and gives you a concrete edge over other entry-level candidates targeting California's competitive market.
Where can I find and apply to portfolio analyst jobs in California?
You can find and apply to portfolio analyst jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across asset management, banking, insurance, and institutional investing. Find a role that fits and apply directly.
