Tips for Your Postdoctoral Associate Job Search
Tailor your CV for each lab
Postdoc applications live or die on your CV's fit with a PI's active grants and methods. Reorder your publications, techniques, and research aims to mirror the language in the lab's recent papers before you apply to each opening.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists postdoctoral associate openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Turn your dissertation into a pitch
Write a two-paragraph research statement that translates your thesis into plain scientific impact. Hiring committees include non-specialists, so lead with the problem you solved, not the technique you used.
Request reference letters before applying
Most postdoc offers move fast once a PI decides. Line up three references who can speak to your bench skills and independence well before you submit your first application, so you're not scrambling after an interview.
Ask about mentorship structure in interviews
During interviews, ask how often you'll meet one-on-one with the PI, whether lab members have published first-author papers, and what the typical path to an independent project looks like. These answers reveal whether a position supports your career goals.
Negotiate start date and protected research time
Postdoc offers often include room to negotiate your start date and the percentage of time protected for your own projects versus lab service work. Clarify both in writing before you accept to avoid misaligned expectations later.
Postdoctoral Associate Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most postdoctoral associates?
The companies hiring the most postdoctoral associates right now include Rutgers University, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and Florida International University, with the largest share of openings in Florida, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Research-intensive universities and federal laboratory systems consistently account for the majority of postdoc openings nationally.
How many postdoctoral associate jobs are remote?
About 4% of postdoctoral associate openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on laboratory nature of most positions. Computational biology, bioinformatics, data science, and theoretical physics postdocs make up the largest share of roles that can be performed remotely or on a hybrid schedule.
How do you become a postdoctoral associate?
You become a postdoctoral associate by earning a doctoral degree, then applying directly to advertised positions or contacting principal investigators whose research aligns with yours. A competitive application typically includes a CV, a research statement describing your doctoral work and future aims, writing samples or publication reprints, and three reference letters from faculty who supervised your graduate research.
Can you get a postdoctoral associate position with no prior postdoc experience?
Yes, postdoctoral associate roles are entry-level by design and are intended for researchers who have just completed their PhD. Hiring PIs assess your doctoral research output, technical skills, and scientific independence rather than prior postdoc appointments. Strong publications, a clear research statement, and an in-person or virtual research presentation typically carry the most weight in the selection process.
What does the postdoctoral associate interview process look like?
The interview process for a postdoctoral associate role usually starts with an informal call with the PI to discuss mutual research interests. If that goes well, you're invited to give a seminar on your doctoral research, followed by individual meetings with lab members and sometimes a department committee. The PI then decides quickly, often within a week or two, and extends an informal offer before paperwork begins.
Where can I find and apply to postdoctoral associate jobs?
You can find and apply to postdoctoral associate jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from institutions and research organizations across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your research area and career stage, then apply directly to each position that fits.
