Mid Level Principal Designer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level principal designer job?
Lead with ownership. Hiring managers at this level want to see that you've driven a project from brief to delivery, made design decisions independently, and advocated for your work with stakeholders. Highlight specific outcomes, not just contributions. A strong portfolio that shows your decision-making process, not only final screens, is what separates mid level candidates from those still viewed as junior.
Which companies hire mid level principal designers?
Companies hiring mid level principal designers right now include Fluor, Worley, and HAZEN AND SAWYER, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a mix of established product companies, design-forward agencies, and growth-stage startups that need designers who can work with real autonomy.
Are there remote mid level principal designer jobs?
Yes, and the share is substantial. About 44% of mid level principal designer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how broadly distributed design teams have become. Remote roles at this level often expect stronger async communication and self-direction, since you're expected to move projects forward without daily in-person check-ins.
How do I move up to a mid level principal designer role?
Getting to mid level is about demonstrating consistent ownership over time. Early in your career, focus on completing assigned work well. Then push to take on fuller project cycles, document what you decided and why, and show measurable impact on product or user outcomes. Mentoring a more junior colleague, even informally, signals the leadership readiness that mid level roles require.
Which industries hire the most mid level principal designers?
Mid Level principal designer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Retail, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors tend to hire at this level because they have mature enough design functions to need independent contributors, but enough product complexity that they can't rely solely on senior or lead designers for day-to-day execution.
