Principal System Architect Jobs in Arlington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a principal system architect job in Arlington?
Focus your search on the defense and federal IT contractors concentrated in Rosslyn, Crystal City, and the areas immediately surrounding the Pentagon. These employers prioritize candidates with experience on large-scale government or enterprise systems, active security clearances, and familiarity with DoD acquisition frameworks. A background integrating cloud-native architectures with legacy government infrastructure gives you a clear edge over candidates with purely commercial experience.
Which companies hire principal system architects in Arlington?
Employers hiring principal system architects in Arlington right now include Booz Allen Hamilton, Amazon, and VHC Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Arlington's hiring base skews heavily toward defense primes, federal systems integrators, and civilian agency contractors, many of which maintain large engineering offices along the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor and near the Pentagon.
Are there remote principal system architects jobs in Arlington?
Yes, though with meaningful limits: principal system architect roles often require on-site collaboration for architecture reviews, stakeholder meetings, and classified program work. About 26% of principal system architect openings tied to Arlington are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with full-remote arrangements most common for commercial cloud and enterprise roles rather than cleared defense positions.
How can I get a principal system architect job in Arlington with little or no experience?
The most realistic path in Arlington is entering through a mid-level systems engineer or solutions architect role at one of the area's many federal IT contractors, then building toward the principal level over two to three years. Employers in the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor and Crystal City regularly hire associate architects for large programs, and obtaining a security clearance early dramatically expands which opportunities become available to you.
