Program Supervisor Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a program supervisor in California?
Most program supervisor roles in California require a bachelor's degree in social work, public health, psychology, or a related field, with a master's degree preferred in behavioral health and county government settings. Candidates coming through the social services path often pursue licensure with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, such as an LCSW or MFT, which strengthens eligibility for clinical program supervisor positions. Building direct service experience first and then moving into a lead or coordinator role is the most common California hiring path.
Which companies hire program supervisors in California?
Employers hiring program supervisors in California right now include AECOM, Rtx Corporation, and PENNYMAC, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large county human services departments, regional hospital systems, and statewide nonprofit networks are among the most consistent sources of program supervisor openings throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most program supervisor jobs?
Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco have the most program supervisor openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its massive county government and dense concentration of nonprofit and healthcare organizations, while San Francisco and Sacramento reflect demand from state agencies, regional health systems, and federally funded community programs anchored in those metro areas.
Are there remote program supervisor jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since program supervisors typically oversee staff and services that require on-site presence. About 11% of program supervisor openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid schedules more prevalent than fully remote. Administrative and grant-management components of the role are the most likely to be performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a program supervisor in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to first build direct service or coordination experience in a related role, such as case manager, program coordinator, or community health worker, with a California county agency or a regional nonprofit. Large California employers like county behavioral health departments and health systems often post associate program supervisor or lead coordinator roles specifically designed as stepping stones. Earning a California Board of Behavioral Sciences-recognized credential or completing a nonprofit management certificate from a California community college gives candidates a clear edge when competing for their first supervisory title.
Where can I find and apply to program supervisor jobs in California?
You can find and apply to program supervisor jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across social services, healthcare, nonprofits, and public sector organizations. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that interest you.
