Regional Planner Jobs in Colorado: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Colorado?
Most regional planner roles in Colorado require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, geography, or public policy, with a master's degree preferred for mid-level and senior positions. Colorado does not issue a state-specific planner license, but the American Institute of Certified Planners credential is widely expected by Colorado employers, particularly for advancement. Candidates sitting for the AICP exam need qualifying work experience under the supervision of a practicing planner.
Which companies hire regional planners in Colorado?
Colorado regional planner roles are posted by Lockheed Martin, Sierra Space, and Freeport-McMoRan and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Colorado's mix of fast-growing municipalities, regional planning agencies, and large infrastructure consulting firms creates openings across the public and private sectors statewide.
Which Colorado cities have the most regional planner jobs?
Denver, Colorado Springs, and Highlands Ranch account for the largest share of regional planner openings in Colorado. The Denver metro dominates due to the concentration of metropolitan planning organizations, county planning departments, and major consulting offices headquartered along the Front Range, while Colorado Springs and Boulder generate steady demand through ongoing growth management and transit planning initiatives.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Colorado?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical fields because regional planning regularly requires site visits, public hearings, and coordination with local agencies. About 29% of regional planner openings tied to Colorado are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with the remote-eligible share concentrated in policy research, GIS analysis, and grant writing tasks that do not require a physical presence.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Colorado with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or planning technician role with a Colorado county or municipal planning department, which routinely brings on candidates straight from accredited planning programs. Denver Regional Council of Governments and Jefferson County Planning and Zoning both hire entry-level analysts. Candidates with a GIS certificate from a Colorado university and a portfolio of zoning or land use projects stand out, and roles like GIS technician or community development coordinator are common lateral starting points.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Colorado?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in Colorado on Migrate Mate, which lists current Colorado openings updated on an ongoing basis. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to the positions that fit.
