Regional Planner Jobs in Indiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Indiana?
Most regional planner positions in Indiana require at minimum a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, geography, or public administration, with a master's degree preferred for mid-level and senior roles. Indiana does not issue a state-specific planning license, but the nationally recognized AICP credential issued by the American Institute of Certified Planners is the standard professional benchmark Indiana employers expect. Candidates typically build eligibility for the AICP exam through a combination of qualifying education and documented professional planning experience.
Which companies hire regional planners in Indiana?
Employers hiring regional planners in Indiana right now include ArborMetrics Solutions, Eli Lilly, and Slate Auto, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Indiana's mix of metropolitan planning organizations, county governments, and infrastructure engineering consultancies creates a broad range of employer types across both the public and private sectors.
Which Indiana cities have the most regional planner jobs?
The cities with the most regional planner openings in Indiana are Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Lafayette. Indianapolis dominates hiring as the seat of the Indianapolis MPO and home to the state's largest planning consultancies, while Fort Wayne and South Bend generate steady demand through regional infrastructure projects, comprehensive plan updates, and urban revitalization initiatives tied to their anchor institutions and growing metro areas.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Indiana?
Yes, but they are limited. Regional planning is fundamentally tied to place, requiring site visits, public hearings, and close coordination with local government officials, which keeps most Indiana roles at least partially in-person. About 22% of regional planner openings tied to Indiana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026. When remote work does appear, it most often applies to research-heavy tasks such as data analysis, grant writing, and GIS mapping.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Indiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an internship or planning technician role with a county planning department or a metropolitan planning organization such as the Indianapolis MPO or the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission. Many Indiana engineering and planning firms, including HNTB and American Structurepoint, hire new graduates into junior planner or GIS analyst roles. A completed planning degree, a GIS skills portfolio, and active AICP candidate status all strengthen an application significantly for candidates without substantial professional experience.
