INTRODUCTION
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is very widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors. The company is a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, with 1000+ colleagues in 70+ countries and very few office based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution. The company is founder led, profitable and growing. The mission of the LXD team is to build a next-generation private cloud infrastructure, combining KVM, Ceph, and SDN technologies to create a data center scale cloud that 'just works' and provides a mission-critical cloud for edge and core enterprise deployments.
We are hiring a Golang software engineer to work on the low level Go codebase sitting between our REST API and the low level C libraries used to manage containers and virtual machines. We are looking for system-level developers with experience in design and data management/modeling. LXD components span the entire software stack from low-level kernel features to the upper level management API/CLI. Our most effective engineers are fluent in all these layers, and able to anticipate the consequences of design and engineering choices elsewhere in a complex distributed system. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to have a meaningful impact on modern cloud computing technologies. Canonical offers a fun, fast-paced team environment and a career full of learning and development.

Tips for Your Remote Golang Developer Job Search
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote golang developer openings from across the U.S. in one place. Search by the stack or seniority that matches where you are now and apply directly to the roles that fit, without digging through listings that mix in on-site work.
Show async communication in your portfolio
Remote golang teams evaluate written communication as seriously as code. Add clear READMEs, architecture decision records, and inline documentation to your Go projects so hiring managers can see how you explain technical decisions without a whiteboard.
Demonstrate concurrency work with real examples
Remote golang roles almost always involve concurrent systems. Highlight specific goroutine patterns, channel design choices, or race condition fixes you've shipped in production code. Concrete examples from real codebases outperform abstract claims about Go proficiency.
Prepare for asynchronous technical screens
Many distributed teams use async coding assessments before scheduling a live interview. Practice writing idiomatic Go under time constraints and get comfortable explaining your design choices in written form, since your written notes may be reviewed before anyone speaks with you.
Match your setup to remote team expectations
Distributed golang teams often ask directly about your home office setup, timezone availability, and experience with tools like Slack, Notion, and GitHub Actions. Being specific about your async workflow and development environment signals you've actually worked remotely before.
Remote Golang Developer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote golang developer job?
Target companies that run distributed engineering teams, since those roles are built for async collaboration from day one. Remote golang employers screen for fluency with concurrent programming patterns, experience with gRPC or REST API design, and a clear written communication style. A public GitHub repo showing idiomatic Go code and a history of contributing to async, self-directed projects gives you a real edge over candidates with only in-office experience.
Which companies hire remote golang developers?
Companies hiring remote golang developers right now include Conexess, Jack Henry & Associates, and Nvidia, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first technology firms and distributed product teams in cloud infrastructure, fintech, and developer tooling tend to hire golang developers remotely most consistently.
Can you get a remote golang developer job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level golang roles are harder to land because you'll be expected to work independently from your first week without on-site mentorship. Smaller remote-first startups and open-source-driven companies are the most likely to consider early-career candidates. Showing a portfolio of Go projects on GitHub, contributions to open-source Go repositories, and clear written documentation in your code signals that you can operate without hand-holding.
Do you need a degree for remote golang developer jobs?
Not always. Remote golang employers care more about what you can build than where you studied, and a strong GitHub portfolio often carries more weight than a diploma in engineering hiring. That said, some larger companies do list a degree as a formal requirement, so demonstrating equivalent depth through shipped projects, open-source contributions, or certifications in cloud platforms where Go is commonly used helps close that gap.
Which industries hire the most remote golang developers?
Remote golang developer roles concentrate in Technology & Software and Electronics & Hardware, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Those sectors rely heavily on distributed engineering teams building high-throughput backend systems, which is exactly the kind of work Go was designed for.
