Tips for Your Remote Internship Job Search
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote internship openings from companies across the U.S. in one place, so you can find roles that match your skills and apply directly without sorting through mixed results. Early applications matter because remote roles close fast.
Show async communication skills upfront
Remote employers filter out interns who need hand-holding. Your cover letter and emails should demonstrate clear, concise written communication. Structure your message with context, your ask, and a concrete next step, since that mirrors how distributed teams actually operate day to day.
Build a public portfolio before you apply
Remote hiring managers can't meet you in a hallway. A GitHub repo, a published piece, a live project, or a case study gives reviewers something concrete to evaluate. Link it in your resume header so it's the first thing a recruiter sees when they open your application.
Target remote-first companies directly
Companies built around distributed work onboard remote interns far more smoothly than traditional offices experimenting with remote. Look for companies whose job postings mention async workflows, digital-first culture, or tools like Notion, Linear, or Loom, as those signals indicate an actual remote infrastructure.
Remote Internship Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote internship job?
Target companies that already run distributed teams, since they have established onboarding for remote interns and expect self-directed work from day one. Remote employers screen for written communication skills, comfort with async tools like Slack and Notion, and the ability to manage your own schedule. A portfolio project, GitHub repo, or published writing sample gives you a concrete edge over candidates who list skills without proof.
Which companies hire remote internships?
Companies hiring remote internships right now include APCO Worldwide, BlackRock, and Builders FirstSource, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Remote-first software companies, digital media outlets, and fintech startups make up a large share of these openings, since their distributed team structures make onboarding a remote intern practical from the start.
Can you get a remote internship job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry roles are harder to land because employers need confidence you can work independently without in-person oversight. Remote-first startups and small distributed teams tend to be more open to first-time interns. What opens the door is demonstrable output: a class project, a personal website, a contributed open-source commit, or any work that shows you can produce results without someone sitting next to you.
Do you need a degree for remote internship jobs?
Not always. Many remote internship postings list a degree as preferred rather than required, and distributed teams often weigh demonstrated skills and real work samples more heavily than credentials. A strong portfolio, relevant coursework, or a completed side project can substitute for a degree at companies that hire based on output rather than formal education history.
Which industries hire the most remote internships?
Most remote internship openings sit in Technology & Software, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. These sectors hire remote interns at scale because their distributed team structures and digital workflows make it straightforward to integrate an intern without requiring physical office access.
