What Employers Look For

- Bachelor's or master's degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program
- Active state licensure such as LSW, LCSW, or LMSW depending on the role
- Experience with case management, crisis intervention, or direct client services

- Ability to complete mandated reporter training and pass a background check
Tips for Your Remote Social Work Job Search
List your licensure tier prominently
Employers screen for BSW, MSW, LSW, LCSW, and LCSW-C credentials before reading anything else. Put your current license, the issuing state, and expiration date in a dedicated line at the top of your resume, not buried in an education section.
Tailor your resume to the population served
A child protective services role and an inpatient psychiatric role both say social worker, but hiring managers want evidence you've worked with their specific population. Rewrite your bullet points to match the age group, setting, and presenting issues named in each posting.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists social work openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Translate case management metrics into impact
Vague statements like 'managed a caseload' tell hiring managers nothing. Describe the caseload size, the intervention types you used, and what outcomes shifted for clients, such as reduced crisis calls or successful reunifications, so your experience reads as evidence, not job description.
Prepare for scenario-based interview questions
Social work interviews routinely use behavioral and ethical scenarios: a client discloses abuse, a family refuses services, or a colleague crosses a professional boundary. Practice structured responses that name the ethical principle, the immediate action, and how you documented it.
Negotiate supervision hours into your offer
If you're working toward clinical licensure, the number of supervised hours an employer offers per month is a concrete benefit worth negotiating alongside salary. Ask whether a licensed supervisor is on staff, how often supervision meetings are held, and whether hours are documented in the format your state board requires.
Remote Social Work Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote social work job?
Target companies that already run distributed teams, since they hire remotely by default and know how to onboard someone they never meet in person. Remote social work employers screen hard for self-direction and clear written communication on top of the core skills, so show evidence you can own work without someone over your shoulder. Apply to the openings above that match your experience.
Which companies hire remote social works?
Employers currently hiring remote social works include Allina Health, Televero Health, and Heartland Dental, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first firms and large companies running distributed teams post the most remote social work roles.
Can you get a remote social work job with no experience?
Yes, but it is harder than an on-site role, because remote work expects you to operate independently from the start. Entry-level remote social work openings do exist, especially at remote-first companies, and a portfolio of real work helps more than a long resume. Applying broadly to the roles that fit improves your odds.
Do you need a degree for remote social work jobs?
Not always. Many employers hire remote social works on demonstrated skills and prior work rather than a specific degree, though some larger companies still prefer one. Showing relevant results matters more than a credential for most remote social work roles.
Which industries hire the most remote social works?
Remote social work roles concentrate in Healthcare & Medical Services, Education, and Technology & Software, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These sectors run distributed teams and hire social works remotely most consistently.
