Tips for Your Research Analyst Internship Search
Apply earlier than the job posting suggests
Large employers recruiting for summer research analyst internships open applications the preceding fall, sometimes in August or September. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so roles appear year-round. Check listings regularly and apply as soon as a role opens rather than waiting until the stated deadline.
Build a portfolio before your first application
Research analyst intern recruiters expect limited work history, so a documented project portfolio is what gives them something concrete to evaluate. Include two or three complete analyses with the tools you used, Python, R, Excel, SQL, or whichever fits your focus, and link directly to the work so reviewers can see it without asking.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured internship programs tied to your university, and recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person. Professors and career center staff frequently know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach.
Practice your analytical screen out loud before you apply
Research analyst intern interviews typically include a technical or analytical screen, a case exercise, a data interpretation prompt, or a take-home analysis. Practice explaining your reasoning step by step, not just reaching the right answer, because interviewers weigh how you think through ambiguous problems as much as the final output.
Target structured research internship programs in the first wave
Larger organizations running rotational or cohort-based research internship programs recruit early and fill their cohorts well before the summer. Identify the structured programs that fit your background, note their application windows, and submit in the first round rather than waiting to see if you hear back from other roles first.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 100% of the research analyst internships listed here. Decide what you can actually commit to before you start sorting through listings. Filtering by location and work type from the start means you spend time on roles you can take, not on ones you'll decline after the interview.
Research Analyst Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a research analyst internship?
Lead with coursework and personal projects rather than work history, hiring teams at the intern level expect limited professional experience. The concrete artifact that gives recruiters something to assess is a portfolio of documented analyses: datasets you cleaned, models you built, or reports you wrote. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a research analyst internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for research analyst interns is the quality of your project work, whether the team has open headcount when your internship ends, and how early in the summer you signal interest. Position for a return offer by performing well on real deliverables without counting on one.
When should I apply for research analyst internships?
Earlier than most expect. Large employers recruit summer research analyst interns the preceding fall, sometimes opening applications in August or September. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to their start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking listings regularly and applying as soon as roles appear gives you the best chance at competitive programs before cohorts fill.
Are research analyst internships paid?
Most professional research analyst internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show it where the employer chooses to disclose it. Nonprofit, government, and some academic research roles occasionally offer stipends or academic credit arrangements, so read each listing carefully to understand the structure before applying.
What should a research analyst internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that show the tools you used and link to the work itself, published analyses, case studies, written reports, or a data portfolio. Add relevant coursework in statistics, research methods, or your field of focus. Keep the whole document to one page.
Are there remote research analyst internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 0% of the research analyst internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast, so apply early and filter by work type to see them before they close.
Can international students get research analyst internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
