Research And Development Engineer Jobs in Mississippi: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research and development engineer in Mississippi?
The standard path begins with a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program, such as those offered at Mississippi State University or the University of Mississippi. Mississippi does not require a state license specifically for research and development engineers, but roles at federal labs and defense contractors often require Professional Engineer registration through the Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors, plus a security clearance for government-affiliated positions.
Which companies hire research and development engineers in Mississippi?
Employers hiring research and development engineers in Mississippi right now include University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson State University, and The University of Southern MIssissippi, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Mississippi's defense and shipbuilding industries, anchored on the Gulf Coast and near federal research installations, generate the most consistent demand for engineers in research and applied development roles.
Which Mississippi cities have the most research and development engineer jobs?
Jackson, Hattiesburg, and Tupelo account for the largest share of research and development engineer openings in Mississippi. Jackson draws postings from state agencies and private manufacturing firms, Biloxi and Pascagoula are anchored by shipbuilding and defense contractors along the Gulf Coast, and the Columbus area benefits from proximity to Columbus Air Force Base and its associated engineering support ecosystem.
Are there remote research and development engineer jobs in Mississippi?
Yes, but they're rare. Research and development engineering is fundamentally hands-on, requiring lab access, prototype testing, and on-site collaboration, so most Mississippi roles are in-person. About 0% of research and development engineer openings tied to Mississippi are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in computational modeling, data analysis, and technical writing functions that do not require physical lab presence.
How can I get hired as a research and development engineer in Mississippi with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a co-op or internship at one of Mississippi's federal research installations, particularly the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, which runs structured student and recent-graduate programs. Ingalls Shipbuilding also offers early-career engineering rotations on the Gulf Coast. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or materials engineering who can demonstrate lab coursework, a senior capstone project, or an engineering intern portfolio have a clear advantage over those without hands-on documentation of their work.
Where can I find and apply to research and development engineer jobs in Mississippi?
You can find and apply to research and development engineer jobs in Mississippi on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and location, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
