Laboratory Technician Jobs in Mississippi: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a laboratory technician in Mississippi?
Mississippi clinical laboratory professionals are regulated under the Mississippi State Department of Health, which requires laboratory personnel in certain roles to hold certification from a nationally recognized body such as ASCP or AMT. Most positions require at minimum an associate degree in medical laboratory technology or clinical laboratory science from an accredited program, followed by passing a national certification exam. Non-clinical lab roles in manufacturing or environmental science typically require a science degree and on-the-job training.
How much do laboratory technicians make in Mississippi?
Laboratory technicians in Mississippi earn a median of about $56,930 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,550 for the lowest 10% to over $79,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire laboratory technicians in Mississippi?
Employers hiring laboratory technicians in Mississippi right now include Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, Baptist Memorial Health Care, and Commercial Property JFK, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Mississippi's largest health systems, state agency labs, and industrial manufacturers along the Gulf Coast and Interstate 20 corridor represent the most consistent sources of openings.
Which Mississippi cities have the most laboratory technician jobs?
Gulfport, Biloxi, and Laurel account for the most laboratory technician openings in Mississippi. Jackson dominates due to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the concentration of state health agencies, while Hattiesburg benefits from Forrest General Hospital and Southern Miss, and the Gulf Coast cities of Biloxi and Gulfport are supported by Singing River Health System and a cluster of industrial and environmental labs tied to the region's port and chemical manufacturing activity.
Are there remote laboratory technician jobs in Mississippi?
Yes, but they're rare. Laboratory technician work is largely hands-on and requires physical presence to collect, process, and analyze specimens or materials, so most positions in Mississippi are on-site. About 0% of laboratory technician openings tied to Mississippi are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those roles tend to be in data review, lab informatics, or quality assurance functions that don't require direct specimen handling.
How can I get hired as a laboratory technician in Mississippi with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is enrolling in an accredited medical laboratory technician program at a Mississippi community college, such as Hinds Community College or Pearl River Community College, which include clinical rotations that count as practical experience. Large employers like the University of Mississippi Medical Center hire new graduates into entry-level MLT roles, and phlebotomy or lab assistant positions at regional hospitals frequently serve as stepping stones. Earning ASCP certification before or shortly after graduation gives candidates a measurable edge in a competitive applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to laboratory technician jobs in Mississippi?
