Laboratory Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a laboratory technician in New York?
New York requires clinical laboratory technicians to hold a license issued by the New York State Department of Health, which oversees laboratory personnel certification under Public Health Law. Candidates typically complete an accredited associate or bachelor's degree program in medical laboratory technology or clinical laboratory science, then apply through the New York State Department of Health's Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program. Many programs at institutions like SUNY or CUNY include the clinical hours needed to meet licensure requirements.
How much do laboratory technicians make in New York?
Laboratory technicians in New York earn a median of about $61,210 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $39,040 for the lowest 10% to over $79,630 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire laboratory technicians in New York?
Employers hiring laboratory technicians in New York right now include Columbia University, Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, and NYU Langone Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense network of hospital systems, academic medical centers, and biopharmaceutical companies in the Hudson Valley and New York City metro makes it one of the most active states for ongoing laboratory technician recruitment.
Which New York cities have the most laboratory technician jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Syracuse have the most laboratory technician openings in New York. New York City drives the largest share of postings due to its concentration of major hospital systems and research institutions, while Buffalo benefits from a strong academic medical presence anchored by institutions like SUNY Buffalo, and Albany's openings reflect state government health labs and regional hospital networks.
Are there remote laboratory technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of laboratory technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects how hands-on the work is in practice. The portions of the role most likely to allow remote work are data review, reporting, and quality assurance analysis, while specimen processing, instrumentation, and direct testing almost always require on-site presence.
