Research Manager Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research manager in New York?
Most research manager roles in New York require a bachelor's degree at minimum, with a master's degree strongly preferred in fields like public health, social sciences, business, or a domain-specific discipline such as clinical research. New York does not issue a state license specifically for research managers, but clinical research professionals often pursue credentials like the Certified Clinical Research Professional designation recognized by New York employers. Relevant experience managing projects, teams, or data programs is the clearest path into the role.
How much do research managers make in New York?
Research managers in New York earn a median of about $134,680 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,440 for the lowest 10% to over $291,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire research managers in New York?
Employers hiring research managers in New York right now include Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), Columbia University, and Cardiovascular Research Foundation, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of pharmaceutical companies, major academic medical centers, financial institutions, and consumer insights firms means demand is spread across multiple industries rather than dominated by a single sector.
Which New York cities have the most research manager jobs?
New York, Albany, and Potsdam have the most research manager openings in New York. New York City leads by a wide margin due to its density of pharmaceutical headquarters, academic medical centers, financial services firms, and consumer research companies, while Albany draws demand from state government agencies, health policy organizations, and university-affiliated research programs, and White Plains benefits from the corporate campuses of major consumer goods and healthcare companies based in Westchester County.
Are there remote research manager jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields, since research management is largely an analytical and coordination role that does not require physical presence on a lab floor or job site. About 24% of research manager openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting broad employer acceptance of distributed teams in this function. Roles focused on market research, policy research, and data analysis tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while clinical research management positions more often require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a research manager in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a research coordinator or research analyst at a New York academic medical center, policy think tank, or market research firm and building toward a management role from within. Institutions like Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York-Presbyterian, and the City University of New York system regularly hire research coordinators and project associates as stepping stones. A master's degree in public health, applied social research, or a relevant domain significantly strengthens candidacy, and pursuing a recognized research credential while in an entry-level role accelerates the transition into management.
Where can I find and apply to research manager jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to research manager jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings across industries and experience levels. Search the listings, find roles that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
