Research Data Scientist Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a research data scientist job in Washington?
Washington's research data scientist market is shaped by federal agencies, defense and intelligence contractors, health policy institutes, and nonprofits clustered along the federal corridor, NoMa, and Foggy Bottom. Candidates with experience in public health data, national security analytics, or policy-driven statistical modeling stand out locally. A graduate degree in a quantitative field is a common expectation, and familiarity with government data systems gives applicants a concrete edge over generalist profiles.
Which companies hire research data scientists in Washington?
Employers hiring research data scientists in Washington right now include Children's National Hospital, Georgetown University, and Howard University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Washington's hiring base skews toward government contractors, federal health and defense agencies, university-affiliated research centers, and policy-focused think tanks rather than the pure commercial tech employers dominant in other markets.
Are there remote research data scientist jobs in Washington?
Yes, though many Washington research data scientist roles involve government data systems or classified work that limits full remote eligibility. About 49% of research data scientist openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common in health research and policy analytics roles tied to agencies like NIH or HHS rather than defense or intelligence work.
How can I get a research data scientist job in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Washington is through research assistant or junior analyst roles at federal contractors, university research centers like those at Georgetown or George Washington University, or health policy nonprofits in the Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom areas. Building proficiency in R or Python applied to public datasets and contributing to open government data projects signals readiness to Washington employers who prioritize applied research skills over years of industry tenure.
Which industries hire the most research data scientists in Washington?
Washington research data scientist roles concentrate in Healthcare & Medical Services, Education, and Science & Research, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Washington's unique position as the seat of federal government means demand is disproportionately driven by public sector research mandates, health and social policy analysis, and defense-adjacent data science rather than the commercial sectors that dominate hiring in other major cities.
