Research Dietitian Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research dietitian in Illinois?
You must hold an active Dietitian Nutritionist license from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which requires completing an accredited dietetic education program, a supervised practice internship, and passing the Commission on Dietetic Registration examination. Research-focused positions typically also require a master's or doctoral degree in nutrition science or a related field, along with demonstrated experience in study design or data analysis.
Which companies hire research dietitians in Illinois?
Employers hiring research dietitians in Illinois right now include Advocate Aurora Health, DiningRD, and Morrison Healthcare, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Illinois's combination of major academic medical centers, global food and nutrition companies headquartered in the Chicago area, and large public health agencies makes it one of the more diverse hiring markets for research dietitians in the country.
Which Illinois cities have the most research dietitian jobs?
Chicago, Springfield, and Illinois account for the most research dietitian openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the largest share through its concentration of academic medical centers and corporate nutrition research headquarters, while Evanston and Urbana-Champaign draw openings through Northwestern University and the University of Illinois campuses, both of which run active nutrition and health sciences research programs.
Are there remote research dietitian jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical fields because much research dietitian work involves direct participant interaction, sample collection, and on-site lab or clinical settings. About 32% of research dietitian openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and the roles most likely to allow remote work are those focused on data analysis, manuscript preparation, and protocol development rather than active patient or participant contact.
How can I get hired as a research dietitian in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a research assistant or research coordinator role within a nutrition or dietetics department at one of Illinois's large academic medical centers or university research programs, such as those at the University of Chicago Medical Center or the University of Illinois at Chicago. These institutions regularly bring on newly credentialed dietitians to support ongoing funded studies. Completing your Illinois Dietitian Nutritionist license and gaining hands-on experience through an accredited dietetic internship with a research rotation gives candidates a concrete advantage when applying.
