INTRODUCTION
We are seeking a Research Nutrition Technician who will be an integral part of the nutrition care team of the ICTR's Research Nutrition Program. This position involves computer nutrient analyses of diets, menu planning, anthropometric measurements, instructing and directing patients on research protocols, dosing, moderate cooking, packing out research meals and formula preparation. The technician manages nutrition data of protocols involving pediatric, adult, and outpatient research participants/patients and provides some health coaching. The position reports to the Research Nutrition Core Director and works under the guidance of a supervisor and Research Nutritionists.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Work in compliance with the policies and procedures of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
- Perform nutritional screening and basic nutritional assessments including various anthropometric measurements, calculations of body composition, BMI, MAC, TSF, and z-scores.
- Perform moderate meal preparation and calculation of research diets and weighing out allergy doses.
- Develop and review menus and recipes for research studies and ensure that they are reproducible, accurate and palatable and within the guidelines of the research protocol, e.g., low protein diets, Modified Atkins Diets.
- Conduct telephone and in-person food questionnaire interviews with research patients using different nutrition research tools.
- Review other food questionnaires for completeness and accuracy.
- Collect and enter nutrition data into the database.
- Conduct health coaching visits with research patients.
- Maintain open communication with interdisciplinary team, e.g., ICTR CRU’s nutrition personnel, nursing, physicians, hospital nutrition department personnel, and research coordinators.
- Perform literature searches to support research studies.
- Assist as needed with the rotation programs for dietetic internship programs from Johns Hopkins Bayview MC and University of Maryland Medical System.
- Prepare reports, collect and analyze data, and maintain records.
- Organize and maintain research protocols and dietetic internship rotation binders.
- Assist in designing study recipes for more complex diet therapies.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or certification as a Dietetic Technician.
- One-year related experience.
- Ability to be on-call on weekends as needed.
- Ability to travel between research sites located in Woodlawn and Bayview Medical Center as needed.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Culinary Nutrition or related field.
- Health Coach certification.

Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
