Research Technician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research technician in California?
Most research technician positions in California require at least a bachelor's degree in a life science, physical science, or environmental science discipline. Clinical laboratory roles may require a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or a Limited Phlebotomy Technician certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health's Laboratory Field Services. For non-clinical research roles in biotech, academia, or environmental science, relevant coursework and hands-on lab experience through university programs or internships is the primary path employers look for.
Which companies hire research technicians in California?
Employers hiring research technicians in California right now include Lam Research, OpenAI, and TikTok, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of biotech firms, research universities, and hospital systems means demand is spread across both large institutions and specialized mid-size companies throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most research technician jobs?
The California cities with the most research technician openings are San Francisco, Fremont, and San Jose. This distribution reflects the concentration of biotech campuses and research universities in San Diego and the Bay Area, the presence of major academic medical centers in Los Angeles, and the broader life sciences and environmental research industries anchored across all three metro areas.
Are there remote research technician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Most research technician work is inherently hands-on and requires physical presence in a laboratory or field setting. About 20% of research technician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be data analysis, documentation, or research coordination roles rather than bench or field positions.
How can I get hired as a research technician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to research assistant or lab aide positions at California's public university systems, where UC campuses and Cal State schools regularly post entry-level openings for new graduates. Large California biotech employers like Genentech and Amgen run internship and associate scientist programs that accept candidates with limited professional experience. Lateral moves from clinical laboratory aide or environmental field technician roles are also common. Completing California Community College science coursework and earning a phlebotomy or clinical laboratory assistant certification strengthens early applications significantly.
Where can I find and apply to research technician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to research technician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across biotech, academic research, clinical, and environmental sectors. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly.
