The Tang Lab is dedicated to advancing the understanding of cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on human heart failure and cardiomyopathy. Research efforts center on identifying how genomic, immune, metabolic, and cellular mechanisms contribute to disease progression, as well as the protective processes that may mitigate these effects. The goal is to improve early detection of individuals at risk and develop strategies to prevent the onset and progression of heart failure and cardiomyopathy. As a Research Technician on our team, you will perform laboratory techniques and procedures supporting assigned experimental studies, assist with planning and scheduling analyses, and conduct experiments using a range of laboratory equipment and instrumentation. In this role, you will work in a laboratory setting supporting mouse work including tissue harvesting, surgical procedures, and colony management. Responsibilities include molecular and biochemical experiments, basic genotyping and PCR processing, and routine laboratory tasks, as well as compiling and organizing experimental results for review by research staff.
A caregiver in this position works days from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Perform laboratory techniques procedures required for experimental studies.
- Perform technical lab duties as delegated by the Research Staff Supervisor related to the assigned project.
- Schedule and perform the various analyses needed to complete the project.
- Assist with establishing and scheduling of various procedures and analysis.
- Prepare reagents and purify chemicals using chromatography, distillation, etc.
- Identify, separate and quantify various substances.
- Conduct tests and procedures utilizing various laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Accumulate data from analyses, prepare charts, graphs, statistical tables for presentation to Research Staff Supervisor for final analysis and preparation for publication, grant proposals and applications for research funds.
- Potentially order laboratory supplies and equipment.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma or GED and two years of experience in a research or related laboratory environment
- OR Associate’s Degree in a laboratory science field and one year of experience
- OR Bachelor’s Degree
- Comfortable handling mice in an academic research setting (no allergies or fear of mice)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry techniques
- Experience with Basic and biological PCR genotyping
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods
- Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment
- Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information
- Ability to distinguish color
- Manual dexterity to handle specimens and repair equipment
- Ability to lift and transport equipment or specimens weighing up to 20 pounds
- May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, bio-hazards, radioactive materials, etc.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
COMPENSATION
- Minimum hourly: $18.88
- Maximum hourly: $28.80
