Entry Level School Counselor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an entry level school counselor job?
Start by completing your state licensure requirements, which typically include a master's degree in school counseling and a supervised internship. Hiring managers at this level look for documented practicum hours, familiarity with counseling frameworks like ASCA, and experience working directly with students. A strong letter of recommendation from a supervising counselor and a clear case for your counseling philosophy can set you apart from other new graduates.
Which companies hire entry level school counselors?
Companies hiring entry level school counselors right now include Chicago Public Schools, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, and IDEA Public Schools, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. At this level, hiring comes primarily from public school districts, charter school networks, and private K-12 institutions that are actively building or replacing their counseling staff.
Are there remote entry level school counselor jobs?
Yes, though remote options are limited compared to other fields since most school counselor roles require an in-person presence. About 1% of entry level school counselor openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to be with virtual charter schools, online learning platforms, or district-level administrative support roles rather than traditional campus-based positions.
Are these new grad school counselor jobs?
Yes, the entry level school counselor openings listed here include new grad, recent graduate, and junior roles. A posting is typically new-grad friendly when it welcomes zero to two years of experience, counts supervised internship or practicum hours toward the requirement, or explicitly invites candidates who are newly licensed. These roles are designed for counselors who are early in their careers, not yet managing departments or leading district programs.
Which industries hire the most entry level school counselors?
Entry Level school counselor roles concentrate in Education, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Government & Public Sector, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive hiring at the entry level because they face consistent demand for student support services and often have structured onboarding or mentorship programs that make them accessible to candidates fresh out of a graduate counseling program.
