School Counselor Jobs in Wisconsin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school counselor in Wisconsin?
To become a school counselor in Wisconsin you must earn a master's degree in school counseling, complete a supervised school counseling internship, and obtain a license from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The DPI issues a School Counselor license under its educator licensing framework, which requires passing the relevant Praxis exam and a background check. Most Wisconsin university programs are designed to meet DPI licensure requirements directly.
Which companies hire school counselors in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin school counselor roles are posted by United Community Center, Madison Country Day School, and School District of La Crosse and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Public school districts are the dominant employers, but cooperative educational service agencies and private and charter schools also post openings throughout the year.
Which Wisconsin cities have the most school counselor jobs?
Waupun, Pulaski, and Waunakee consistently have the most school counselor openings in Wisconsin. Milwaukee leads because of the size of Milwaukee Public Schools and the density of charter and private schools in the metro, while Madison's openings are driven by the Madison Metropolitan School District and the concentration of educational institutions tied to the University of Wisconsin system.
Are there remote school counselor jobs in Wisconsin?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of school counselor openings tied to Wisconsin are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how central in-person student contact is to the work. The portions of the role most likely to be conducted remotely are administrative tasks, virtual college advising sessions, and tele-mental-health check-ins at districts that have adopted hybrid service models.
How can I get hired as a school counselor in Wisconsin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a school counseling internship embedded within a Wisconsin district during your master's program, since many districts convert strong interns into hires when positions open. Large systems like Milwaukee Public Schools and the Madison Metropolitan School District run new counselor residency pipelines, and candidates who also hold a Wisconsin teaching license or background in school psychology or social work have a clear lateral path into counseling roles. Building a data-driven counseling program portfolio and obtaining your DPI license before graduation gives you a competitive edge over candidates still completing licensure.
Where can I find and apply to school counselor jobs in Wisconsin?
You can find and apply to school counselor jobs in Wisconsin on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from districts and schools across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your license level, grade preference, and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
