School Social Worker Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school social worker in Hawaii?
You become a school social worker in Hawaii by earning a Master of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program and obtaining a social work license through the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Professional and Vocational Licensing division. Public school positions also require meeting Hawaii Department of Education licensure standards for school-based social work. Most district positions expect candidates to hold or be eligible for a Licensed Social Worker designation before their start date.
Which companies hire school social workers in Hawaii?
Employers hiring school social workers in Hawaii right now include State of Hawaii, The Judiciary, State of Hawaii, and Kaiser Permanente, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The Hawaii Department of Education is the dominant public employer, while charter networks and nonprofits serving Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander youth also post regularly.
Which Hawaii cities have the most school social worker jobs?
The cities with the most school social worker openings in Hawaii are Honolulu, Wailuku, and Hilo. Honolulu accounts for the largest share because it anchors the state's biggest school district and most of its nonprofit student services organizations, while Hilo and Kailua-Kona reflect the Hawaii Island complex's sizable DOE enrollment and growing community health partnerships.
Are there remote school social worker jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, but they're rare. School social workers are fundamentally on-site roles built around in-person student assessment, family outreach, and IEP meetings, so full remote work is uncommon. About 20% of school social worker openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to involve administrative coordination, telehealth counseling support, or statewide program oversight rather than direct school-based caseloads.
How can I get hired as a school social worker in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to the Hawaii Department of Education's provisional hire track, which allows candidates who have completed their MSW to begin in a school-based support role while finalizing licensure. Large employers like Kamehameha Schools and Catholic Charities Hawaii of Honolulu regularly bring on social work interns and recent graduates for case aide and student support specialist roles. Building experience as a family school liaison, wraparound facilitator, or behavioral health technician within a DOE school complex gives candidates the Hawaii-specific context that hiring panels look for.
Where can I find and apply to school social worker jobs in Hawaii?
You can find and apply to school social worker jobs in Hawaii on Migrate Mate, which lists current Hawaii openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and licensure level, and apply directly to each position that fits.
