Security Consultant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security consultant in New York?
Most security consultants working in New York start with a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, information systems, or a related discipline, then build credentials through certifications like CISSP or CPP. For roles involving physical security or investigations, New York State requires licensure through the New York State Department of State's Division of Licensing Services, which oversees the security guard and private investigator license categories relevant to consulting work. Cybersecurity-focused consultants typically enter through IT or risk analyst roles before moving into advisory positions.
How much do security consultants make in New York?
Security consultants in New York earn a median of about $83,450 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $45,960 for the lowest 10% to over $144,870 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security consultants in New York?
Employers hiring security consultants in New York right now include TD Securities, Boston Consulting, and Td Securities (Usa), based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, healthcare systems, and large professional services firms creates consistent demand for both cybersecurity and physical security advisory talent across the state.
Which New York cities have the most security consultant jobs?
The cities with the most security consultant openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Hicksville. New York City drives the majority of listings given its density of financial services headquarters, global consulting firms, and major healthcare networks, while Albany generates steady demand from state government agencies and regulated utilities that require ongoing security program support.
Are there remote security consultant jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles, since a significant portion of security consulting involves documentation, risk assessment, and advisory deliverables that don't require on-site presence. About 10% of security consultant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on analysis and strategy rather than physical site inspections. Cybersecurity and compliance-focused consulting roles tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a security consultant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a junior security analyst or risk analyst role at a large New York firm, then building toward a consulting title. Major employers like IBM and Deloitte run associate and analyst programs that accept candidates with relevant degrees and entry-level certifications like CompTIA Security+ or the associate-level CISSP pathway. Adjacent roles in IT auditing, compliance, or law enforcement translate well into security consulting and are recognized by New York hiring managers. Earning the New York State security license adds credibility for roles with a physical security component.
