Tips for Your Security Guard Job Search
List every license you hold
Your guard card, firearm permit, and state-specific licenses belong in a dedicated certifications section near the top of your resume. Hiring managers screen for these before reading anything else, so don't bury them in a skills list at the bottom.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists security guard openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Tailor your resume to the site type
A hospital security role and a warehouse patrol role use different skills. Highlight patient interaction and de-escalation for healthcare, and access control procedures and inventory awareness for logistics. Copying the same resume to every posting costs you callbacks.
Prepare a specific incident story
Interviewers almost always ask how you handled a confrontation or emergency. Have one real example ready with a clear situation, what you did, and the outcome. Vague answers about staying calm don't land as well as a concrete account.
Ask about shift structure before accepting
Night shifts, rotating schedules, and mandatory overtime are common in this field. Clarify the schedule, post-assignment length, and any on-call expectations during the offer stage so there are no surprises after your first week.
Target postings that match your armed status
Armed and unarmed roles have different applicant pools and screening timelines. Filter your search to match your current licensing. Applying to armed roles without the required permit wastes your time and theirs.
Security Guard Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most security guards?
The companies hiring the most security guards right now include FERRARI EXPRESS, Brink's, Incorporated, and Good Guard Security, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Corporate campus security and healthcare facility roles tend to drive the highest volume of active postings.
How many security guard jobs are remote?
About 0% of security guard openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is low compared to most other fields given the on-site nature of the work. The remote share is concentrated in dispatch coordination, remote monitoring, and security operations center roles rather than physical patrol positions.
How do you become a security guard?
Start by obtaining your state-required guard card, which typically involves completing a state-approved training course covering legal powers, emergency procedures, and report writing, followed by a background check. Once licensed, look for entry-level patrol or access control roles to build site experience. Armed positions require a separate firearms permit and additional training hours before you qualify.
Can you get hired as a security guard with no experience?
Yes, many employers hire candidates with no direct security experience if you hold a valid guard card and pass the background and drug screenings. Volunteering, retail loss prevention roles, or any position involving customer conflict resolution can strengthen your application. Emphasizing reliability, punctuality, and a clean record often carries more weight than prior security titles at the entry level.
What does the security guard interview process look like?
Most security guard interviews run one to two rounds. The first is usually a phone or in-person screening covering your licensing status, availability, and background. A second round, when it happens, focuses on situational judgment, such as how you would handle a trespasser or a medical emergency on site. Some employers also conduct a physical fitness assessment or a site walkthrough before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to security guard jobs?
You can find and apply to security guard jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search for roles that match your licensing, location, and preferred shift type, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
