Tips for Your Test Automation Engineer Job Search
Quantify automation coverage on your resume
Hiring managers want to see impact, not just tools. Replace 'wrote automated tests' with specifics: what you automated, what framework you used, and how that reduced regression time or defect escape rate. Vague bullets get skipped.
Target openings that list your exact framework
Test automation roles are framework-specific. Filter for postings that name Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, or your primary stack. Applying to a Playwright-first team when your experience is purely Selenium makes the gap obvious in the first technical screen.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists test automation engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Add a portfolio with real test suites
Link a public GitHub repository containing a working test suite, a clear README, and examples of page object models or data-driven patterns. Hiring managers reviewing dozens of candidates remember the ones who showed code, not just claimed it.
Decode job levels before you apply
Titles vary wildly: 'SDET II' at one company equals 'Senior QA Automation Engineer' at another. Read the responsibilities section carefully. If the role owns CI/CD pipeline configuration and framework architecture, it's senior-level regardless of the title.
Prepare a live coding answer for the take-home
Most test automation interviews include a take-home or live coding round where you write tests against a sample app or API. Practice writing clean assertions, handling dynamic locators, and structuring your suite before your first screen, not after.
Test Automation Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most test automation engineers?
The companies hiring the most test automation engineers right now include Apple, PlayStation, and Palo Alto Networks, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New Jersey, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in companies scaling their software delivery pipelines and reducing manual QA overhead.
How many test automation engineer jobs are remote?
About 21% of test automation engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making this one of the more remote-friendly engineering specializations. API and backend automation roles tend to have the highest remote availability, while positions requiring hands-on device lab or hardware testing are more likely to require on-site work.
How do you become a test automation engineer?
Start by building a solid foundation in manual software testing so you understand what you are automating and why. Then learn a scripting language like Python or JavaScript, pick a widely used framework such as Selenium or Playwright, and build a public portfolio of working test suites. Contribute to open-source projects or add automation to a personal app to demonstrate real-world judgment, not just syntax knowledge.
Can you get hired as a test automation engineer with little experience?
Yes, entry-level test automation engineer roles exist, and employers hiring at that level prioritize demonstrated skills over years on a resume. Build a GitHub repository with real test suites, earn a recognized certification such as ISTQB Foundation, and apply to companies with QA apprenticeship programs or teams that allow engineers to grow from manual into automation work. Your code sample often matters more than your title history.
What does the test automation engineer interview process look like?
Most test automation engineer interviews start with a recruiter screen focused on your background and tool experience, followed by a technical phone screen where you discuss framework design or walk through past work. A take-home or live coding exercise typically follows, asking you to write tests against a sample app or API. Final rounds usually include a system design conversation about test architecture and a behavioral interview with the engineering or QA lead.
Where can I find and apply to test automation engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to test automation engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your framework experience and seniority level, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
