Software Development Manager Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software development manager in Maryland?
Software development management in Maryland does not require a state-issued license or credential. The typical path starts with a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering, followed by several years as a software engineer building leadership experience. Maryland's defense and federal IT sectors place additional value on security clearance eligibility, and certifications such as PMP or Certified Scrum Master are frequently listed as preferred qualifications in local job postings.
Which companies hire software development managers in Maryland?
Maryland software development manager roles are posted by CVS Health, Amazon, and Cornerstone Defense and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maryland's concentration of defense contractors and federal civilian agencies makes it one of the more specialized hiring markets for software development managers in the country.
Which Maryland cities have the most software development manager jobs?
Annapolis, Annapolis Junction, and Laurel have the most software development manager openings in Maryland. The volume in the National Capital Region suburbs reflects the density of federal contractors and government technology programs based there, while Baltimore draws hiring from financial services firms, health systems like Johns Hopkins, and cybersecurity companies that have established offices in the city.
Are there remote software development manager jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of software development manager openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally the role's planning, communication, and oversight work translates to distributed environments. The portions most likely to remain on-site are those tied to classified government programs or hardware-adjacent development teams that require in-person collaboration.
How can I get hired as a software development manager in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a team lead or senior engineer role at a Maryland defense contractor or federal IT firm and building supervisory experience from there. Companies like Leidos and SAIC regularly hire engineers into lead positions that carry people-management responsibility as a stepping stone to formal management. A project management certification and a demonstrated record of mentoring junior engineers strengthen a candidate's case significantly before applying for a manager title.
