Java Developer Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a java developer in Maryland?
Java development is not a state-licensed profession in Maryland, so no Maryland-issued credential is required to work in the role. The typical path is a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or information technology, followed by proficiency demonstrated through a portfolio, open-source contributions, or internships. Many Maryland employers in the defense and federal contracting sectors also require candidates to hold or be eligible for a U.S. security clearance, which is a practical requirement worth pursuing early.
How much do java developers make in Maryland?
Java developers in Maryland earn a median of about $125,570 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,470 for the lowest 10% to over $158,880 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire java developers in Maryland?
Employers hiring java developers in Maryland right now include LCG, Leidos, and National Louis University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maryland's concentration of federal agencies and defense prime contractors means many of these openings are tied to long-running government IT programs, giving java developer roles in the state above-average stability.
Which Maryland cities have the most java developer jobs?
Rockville, Baltimore, and Annapolis Junction have the most java developer openings in Maryland. The Baltimore metro anchors the largest share of listings through its financial services firms, healthcare systems like Johns Hopkins, and state government IT offices, while the D.C. suburbs of Bethesda, Rockville, and Columbia generate strong demand from defense contractors and federal agency support organizations headquartered along the I-270 technology corridor.
Are there remote java developer jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 60% of java developer openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and highly portable nature of software development work. Back-end and cloud integration roles tend to be the most remote-friendly, while positions supporting classified federal programs or on-site DevSecOps teams in the defense sector are more likely to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a java developer in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing an associate software developer or junior developer role through Maryland's large defense contractors and IT services firms, which regularly hire new graduates into structured onboarding programs. Leidos and Northrop Grumman both run early-career technology programs out of their Maryland campuses. Building a GitHub portfolio of Spring Boot projects, earning an AWS Certified Developer associate credential, and targeting roles titled software engineer I or application developer gives candidates without experience a concrete competitive edge.
Where can I find and apply to java developer jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to java developer jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maryland openings across the Baltimore metro, the D.C. suburbs, and the rest of the state. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly.
