Software Development Manager Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software development manager in Pennsylvania?
Software development manager is not a state-licensed role in Pennsylvania, so there is no board exam or registration requirement. The standard path is a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering followed by several years as a software engineer, then a move into a lead or principal engineer role before stepping into management. Pennsylvania employers, particularly in Philadelphia's fintech corridor and Pittsburgh's tech ecosystem, strongly favor candidates who pair technical depth with formal leadership experience or an MBA.
Which companies hire software development managers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring software development managers in Pennsylvania right now include CVS Health, PNC Financial Services, and Comcast, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of large healthcare systems, defense contractors, and financial services firms means hiring is particularly consistent in those sectors across both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most software development manager jobs?
Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia account for the largest share of software development manager openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia dominates due to its density of financial services, health systems, and telecommunications firms, while Pittsburgh's strong university research ties and growing autonomous systems sector drive consistent demand there, and suburban markets like King of Prussia attract corporate headquarters that run large engineering organizations.
Are there remote software development manager jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 47% of software development manager openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and collaborative-tool-driven nature of the role. Strategic planning, sprint facilitation, and stakeholder management translate well to distributed work, while roles requiring hands-on lab access or classified facility clearance in defense-sector positions remain predominantly on-site.
How can I get hired as a software development manager in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a senior individual contributor role into a team lead position within the same Pennsylvania employer. Large organizations like Comcast Technology Solutions and UPMC run internal leadership development programs that identify high-performing engineers for first-time people-management roles. Building a record of mentoring junior developers, leading sprint ceremonies, and owning delivery timelines signals readiness. A project management certification or completing an engineering leadership certificate through a Pennsylvania university extension program also strengthens a candidate's case.
Where can I find and apply to software development manager jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to software development manager jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current Pennsylvania openings updated regularly. Find the roles that fit your experience and seniority level and apply directly to the employers posting them.
