Role overview
As the Manager of the SEO & Content Engineering team at CarGurus, you'll lead an engineering team responsible for one of our most important growth channels: organic discovery. You will partner closely with Marketing, Product, and Engineering leaders to shape the technical strategy behind how millions of shoppers discover CarGurus through search. From evolving our site architecture and content platforms to building new experiences that answer shoppers' questions, your team's work will directly influence traffic growth, shopper engagement, and business outcomes.
Search itself is changing rapidly. Traditional SEO remains critical, but discovery is increasingly happening through AI powered search and recommendation experiences. This team sits at the intersection of engineering, content, and growth, helping ensure CarGurus remains visible, trusted, and easy to discover wherever shoppers begin their journey. You don't need to be an SEO expert on day one. We value strong engineering leadership, sound technical judgment, and the ability to build high performing teams that solve meaningful customer and business problems.
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers through coaching, technical direction, and professional development.
- Build and evolve systems and experiences used by millions of shoppers throughout their car buying journey.
- Partner with Product and Marketing stakeholders to establish priorities and align SEO strategies with broader business goals.
- Drive execution against the team's roadmap, balancing short term impact with long term investments in platform capabilities and technical foundations.
- Use data and experimentation to validate hypotheses, measure impact, and continuously improve organic traffic quality and shopper engagement.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with marketing, design, analytics, engineering, and content teams to implement features to enhance search engine visibility and user experience.
- Own SEO problems end-to-end, managing diverse systems and technologies to optimize efficiency and user experience.
- Help shape CarGurus' strategy for the future of search, ensuring our content and experiences remain discoverable across both traditional search engines and emerging AI powered experiences.
Who you are
- 6+ years of hands-on software design and development experience
- 2+ years of experience managing software development teams
- You have experience leading engineering teams and creating environments where people can do their best work.
- You are comfortable operating in ambiguous, fast moving environments and making thoughtful tradeoffs.
- You have a strong technical foundation and can effectively partner with engineers on architecture, design, and delivery decisions.
- You bring an analytical mindset and can translate data and insights into clear priorities and action.
- You excel at building relationships and influencing across functions and organizational boundaries.
- You have experience delivering customer facing web experiences at scale.
- You understand the fundamentals of SEO and are excited to learn how search and AI driven discovery are evolving.
- You have JavaScript and React experience.
- Experience with Remix is a strong plus.
- Experience with Java based services is a strong plus.
