Tips for Your Software Engineering Manager Job Search
Quantify your engineering team impact
Hiring managers want to see numbers behind your leadership, not just titles. On your resume, call out team size, delivery velocity improvements, and retention outcomes you drove directly. Vague claims about 'leading teams' get skipped.
Highlight technical depth alongside management
Many software engineering manager roles expect you to stay hands-on enough to review architecture decisions. Make your resume show both the managerial and the technical layer, or you risk being filtered out for roles that want a player-coach, not a pure people manager.
Target openings by engineering org size
A software engineering manager role at a 20-person startup and a 5,000-person company require completely different skills. Filter openings by company stage so your application speaks directly to the scope of management they actually need.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists software engineering manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for the engineering manager loop
Expect rounds covering behavioral leadership scenarios, system design at a high level, and cross-functional collaboration. Practice narrating past incidents where you unblocked your team, handled underperformance, or made a technical tradeoff call under pressure.
Negotiate scope before you negotiate salary
Before accepting an offer, clarify team size, reporting structure, and whether the role is a backfill or a new headcount. These details define your actual leverage and day-to-day authority far more than the title itself does.
Software Engineering Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most software engineering managers?
The companies hiring the most software engineering managers right now include Google, CVS Health, and JPMorganChase, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Demand is especially high at companies scaling their engineering orgs through new product lines or infrastructure buildouts.
How many software engineering manager jobs are remote?
About 74% of software engineering manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting a role that often requires in-person presence for team rituals and performance conversations. Platform and infrastructure management sub-areas tend to attract the highest share of fully remote postings compared to consumer-facing product engineering teams.
How do you become a software engineering manager?
Most software engineering managers move into the role from a senior or staff individual contributor position after demonstrating informal leadership, such as mentoring engineers, leading project delivery, or running on-call rotations. From there, the path typically involves taking on a formal lead role on a small team, building a record of hiring and growing engineers, and developing skills in roadmap planning and cross-functional communication.
Can you get a software engineering manager job with little management experience?
Yes, especially at smaller companies or startups that need a first engineering manager on a growing team. If your direct management experience is limited, emphasize informal leadership you have already done, such as leading a project, onboarding junior engineers, or acting as a tech lead. Targeting roles explicitly labeled as 'first-time manager' or 'lead to manager' positions improves your odds significantly.
What does the software engineering manager interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a recruiter screen, followed by a hiring manager conversation about your leadership philosophy and team experience. From there, expect a technical discussion covering system design and how you approach engineering standards, plus a behavioral loop with cross-functional stakeholders focused on conflict resolution, prioritization, and how you develop engineers. Final rounds often include a presentation or a case study on a past team challenge.
Where can I find and apply to software engineering manager jobs?
You can find and apply to software engineering manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. Search the openings to find roles that match your experience and location preferences, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
