Software Quality Engineer Jobs in Rhode Island: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software quality engineer in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island does not require a state-issued license to work as a software quality engineer, so the path centers on education and industry credentials. Most Rhode Island employers look for a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, often from institutions like the University of Rhode Island or Rhode Island School of Design's digital programs. Earning vendor-neutral certifications such as ISTQB Foundation or a tool-specific credential in Selenium or Jira strengthens a candidate's standing with local defense and healthcare technology employers.
How much do software quality engineers make in Rhode Island?
Software quality engineers in Rhode Island earn a median of about $101,790 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,220 for the lowest 10% to over $136,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software quality engineers in Rhode Island?
Companies currently hiring software quality engineers in Rhode Island include CVS Health, Anduril, and ZOLL Medical Corporation, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Rhode Island's concentration of defense contractors, health technology firms, and financial services companies means software quality engineer roles here frequently require familiarity with regulated industries and compliance-oriented testing environments.
Which Rhode Island cities have the most software quality engineer jobs?
The cities with the most software quality engineer openings in Rhode Island are Pawtucket, Providence, and East Providence. Providence dominates because it is home to the state's largest technology employers and financial services operations, while suburban areas like Woonsocket and East Providence draw significant volume from the regional headquarters of CVS Health and defense-adjacent engineering firms concentrated along the I-95 corridor.
Are there remote software quality engineer jobs in Rhode Island?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 30% of software quality engineer openings tied to Rhode Island are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based and tool-driven nature of much of the work. Test planning, automation scripting, and defect triage are the areas most likely to be performed fully remotely, while roles involving hardware-in-the-loop testing or on-site regulated lab environments tend to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a software quality engineer in Rhode Island with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for junior QA analyst or software test associate roles at Rhode Island's larger technology and healthcare IT employers, where teams often onboard candidates from adjacent roles such as technical support, business analysis, or data entry. CVS Health and Fidelity Investments both run early-career associate programs in their Providence-area technology divisions that include quality engineering rotations. Building a portfolio of automated test scripts using open-source projects and earning the ISTQB Foundation certification gives candidates a measurable edge over other applicants without professional QA experience.
