Software Systems Engineer Jobs in Vermont: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software systems engineer in Vermont?
The most common path in Vermont is a bachelor's degree in systems engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field, followed by entry into a defense contractor, semiconductor firm, or fintech company that provides structured mentorship. Vermont does not require a state-issued license specific to software systems engineering, but engineers working on certain defense or safety-critical programs may pursue professional engineering registration through the Vermont Board of Professional Engineering and Land Surveying as a career credential.
How much do software systems engineers make in Vermont?
Software systems engineers in Vermont earn a median of about $125,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,480 for the lowest 10% to over $209,420 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software systems engineers in Vermont?
Companies currently hiring software systems engineers in Vermont include Beta Technologies, National Life, and Vermont Electric Power Company, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Vermont's defense contracting and semiconductor manufacturing base means many of the most active employers are tied to long-running government programs or chip fabrication operations anchored in the Burlington metro area.
Which Vermont cities have the most software systems engineer jobs?
South Burlington, Rutland, and Montpelier account for the largest share of software systems engineer openings in Vermont. Burlington and South Burlington drive the majority of postings because General Dynamics Mission Systems and GlobalFoundries maintain large engineering workforces there, while Montpelier draws additional openings from state government technology programs and financial services firms headquartered in Vermont's capital region.
Are there remote software systems engineer jobs in Vermont?
Yes, and more than most engineering fields, because a meaningful share of software systems work involves design, modeling, and documentation that can be done off-site. About 17% of software systems engineer openings tied to Vermont are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, though roles involving classified defense work or hands-on lab integration typically require on-site presence. The most remote-friendly sub-areas tend to be requirements analysis, systems architecture, and software verification roles.
How can I get hired as a software systems engineer in Vermont with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is targeting associate or junior systems engineer roles at Vermont's major defense and semiconductor employers, where structured rotational or onboarding programs exist for new graduates. GlobalFoundries hires process and integration engineers at the entry level from engineering programs, and General Dynamics Mission Systems has taken graduates into systems engineering associate tracks. Building a portfolio around embedded systems projects, model-based design work, or a capstone that mirrors defense or manufacturing challenges gives candidates a concrete edge when applying to these programs.
Where can I find and apply to software systems engineer jobs in Vermont?
You can find and apply to software systems engineer jobs in Vermont on Migrate Mate, which lists current Vermont openings from employers across defense contracting, semiconductors, fintech, and state government. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly to the ones that match.
